You should treat RTR Gold and RTR Platinum (RTRPE) as two seperate mods. RTRPE is a port of Gold to the 1.5 engine, which basically means it's the same in every way except:

• What version of RTW it's based upon
• What mini-mods are compatible with it

You can have either Gold or Platinum, so the answer is no, they're not compatible.
You can find most mods for Gold have a Platinum equivalent, but there are growing numbers of Platinum mods that haven't got a Gold equivalent.

Platinum is superiour to Gold for many reasons, the two main being that it's based on the RTW1.5 patch and that you can run Platinum with BI.exe, if you have Barbarian Invasion.

I think it didn`t. He was asking about RTW Gold Edition and not about RTR 6 Gold. Anyway, that`s how I understood it.
Yes, RTR Platinum is compatible with Rome Total War Gold Edition. In fact, if you have the version with RTW and Bi on a single DVD, you will probably have RTW v1.5 and BI v1.6 so you won`t need any further patches for them and you will also be able to play RTRPE with the BI.exe.

yep i was indeed talking about rome gold single cd edition. couple more questions as im still tryin to decide what mods to install

ive installed the goth all faction mod for BI as there doesnt seem to be many other options. i would liked there to have been a rtr version done for BI but alas no. as this is a mod for BI can i also install rtr as well or does it have to be 1 or the other?

ive read about darths formation mod which improves the ai in battles. can i install his mod to run along side these other mods?

Darth formations are included in RTRPE. His latest pack is not included AFAIK, but it will probable be part of RTRPE v1.7 full install.
If you have installed Goth`s mod then you will not be able to install RTRPE in the same folder. You can make multiple installs. It is described in here(among other things):
