I used this (Corinthian Hoplite) tactic against an all-mighty Scipii army in a custom battle in Very Hard difficulty.
They had: 1 late general, 6 late legionaries, 3 auxiliary archers, 4 auxilia, 4 legionary cavalry.
I had: 1 late general, 2 noble cavalry, 6 swordsmen, 4 forester warbands, 2 warbands, 2 druids.
I started with the formation shown in the link (my creation), I sent the noblemen advancing quickly to each side around the enemy and halted them.![]()
When in range, I used my foresters against the cavalry. The enemy was about 5 seconds away when I moved my foresters to the sides and started warcry.
I charged both the swordsmen (against legionaries) and the noblemen (against the archers in the rear) and then attacked the flanks with the foresters.
The enemy cavalry was reduced to about 2/3 when it turned charging to the foresters, I immediately commited the warbands in support.
The swordsmen were starting to lose but the same wasn't happening to their morale (druids & general), the archer auxilia were obliterated by my noblemen which were then used to help my flanks which in turn were being slaughtered by the legionary cavalry and the auxilia.
I charged the general to the left flank and managed to free it leaving 1/2 of a warband and a forester fighting in the front, after I freed the right flank my swordsmen were about to rout so I used 'rally troops' and charged everything against the legionaries (the noblemen went by the rear, with this I managed to start a chain rout and kill every non-mouted roman.![]()
It was my toughest victory ever(anything tougher would result in a defeat).
how many were left of your men?
Can't record correctly, but way over half of my men were killed, the more hurt IIRC were the foresters and the cavalry....Originally Posted by Lord Comnenus
i had my spartan army, armenia attacked it with 3 of their fullbanner armies (i had nowhere to move to as i had already retreated once).
i beat them (didnt get a pic of the result unfortunately, only of during the battle if u wanna c) About 2 of their armies were wiped out (obviously nto completely but if u add together all their losses it would be 2 banners worth i think)
another one was armenia vs the romans on vanilla: armenian troops sux vs roman troops, my cavalry managed to salvage it:
curse the footsoldiers though, they kept fleeing without being badly hurt ffs.
to win i used my mobility to run around the map, splitting the roman armies apart (there were 2 groups of cat. archers supported by the cat. cavalry) then using the cat. cavalry to crush these individual units until the romans fled.
This victory. Was a small battle in XGM, but i was outclassed in everyway(except for having the Spartan royal guard). Macedonia attacked my un-walled capitial Sparta, with nothing but two milita phalangites, 1 peltasts, 1 therophori and a unit of Spartan royal guard, and 3 generals to defend it. The enemy had pure phalangites nearly, and 2 generals. So when they turned to corner, i hurled the Spartans in there, catching all their phalangites out've formation, and they killed at least 1/3rd of the entire enemy army, then the militia phalangites went in did a little damage, then finally i broke the enemy with a cavalry charge, and the ebnemy routed, no-one made it out.

Greatest victories come from defending your towns in BI against enemy hordes.
I mean... killing off around 4 enemy stacks while defending with only 4 generals and 2 infantry(and losing 40 footmen) units is great![]()
I had once a battel Parthia(me) against post-Marius Romans with the ods 7:20in Roman favor, but i crushed them too dust

I don't have any screenshots, but my greatest heroic victory was when playing as the julii against 2 armies of spanish. I had infinite ammo enabled just for a bit of fun, but it actually came in use when i stationed my troops at the top of a hill, and put all units that could fire on fire at will. And it was a real steep hill, next to the mountains. I slaughtered the Spanish

This was a rewarding Heroic victory from the last campaign I took part in.
Accidentally bumping into a phalanx
The low point. Mercenaries in Julii pay getting beaten by silver chevron German spearbands.
Team work
Victory. Only 2 of the enemy general bodyguards survived. Not enough to become a garrison in the now defenseless city of Damme. City captured.

Once when playing BI i was goth and i allied with the vandals out of fear because they have 4 completely filled armies in my capital, it turned out that they were just going to attack so i broke the siege (me got no walls) luckily i have 3 noble men, 4 lancers and the lousiest infantry i got. i charged the cav into the flanks and used the infantry insupport the nobles in reserve. i routed the first batch and then came the second, no time for rest i charged them with the reserve and routed them big time. i turns out that my force 1000+ has defeated 3000+ men!
i won a heroic victory as the greek cities against the macdonians
(XGM)i had 1 general , merc. hoplites, and thracian peltasts agianst 3 phalangites, 4 levy phalangites, 1 archer
they attacked me outside of their city, so i ran. when they attacked again i position my men on the top of a hill lik so
G ^ X
g-general, ^ thracian peltasts, X merc hoplites
i spread them out in order to spread the enemy out
i sent my general around the enemy rear to take care of the archers, and the peltasts murdered the first unit coming to my hoplites, then flanked them. the enemy were quite tired after marchin uphill. i sent my general to take care of the AI general from the rear, once he was gone the battle was over
Heroic Victory! i was expecting my mercs to route!
1 question though, the crossed swords for a heroic victory never appeared on my campaign map,
has that been removed?

From what I've seen, there needs to be at least 1000 men involved in the battle (total), and at least even odds or worse. I've had the over 1000 men total but had 6 to 5 odds in my favor and gotten a heroic victory, and it didn't show on the map.
Also, I've had odds terribly in favor of the enemy and only about 500 total men 400 or so of them against 100 or so of mine and gotten the heroic victory without swords showing up.
You can also get heroic victories from auto-resolve...the same rules as above seem to apply.
NOTE: I'm not totally sure about the 1000 men thing though. I think it may have something to do with the enemy army needs to be a certain percentage of their military total and a hard number.
