Just discovered this thread. RTR for the original TW:Rome gave me one of the most memorable TW game experiences ever. Great news to see you guys taking on the heavy challenge to turn Rome 2 into a really enjoyable experience as well.

Another concept that would be especially welcome in RTR-R2 would be some way of reflecting logistics in terms of troop concentrations. As in J.Caesar Gallic campaign, where he'd disperse the army during the winters--and concentrate it in the Spring& summers when the roads would open. By the late Republic Marian Reforms, the legions were capable of 40-50 miles per day--independant of their baggage trains &artillery.
Actually, per some researchers, Romans were not the fastest. Hellenic armies are mentioned several times for making quick marches doing 70km per day or more, while Romans usually moves more carefully and kept their custom to build fortified camps at the end of the day march. Anyway in some circumstances, when speed was necessary, they were also capable doing forced marches with the same speed.

Big Smoke - that image of the Gallic "Oathsworn" is actually very accurate, except they should be on horses, not foot; well equipped Celtic units like that would own horses, and the cavalry was made up of the nobles, his followers and retainers... generally.

True. Except that they wouldn't ride warhorses but more like big ponies... warhorses bred for war and big as we see in movies weren't present in Gallic culture until the middle ages.

Excellent! Now I am also going to buy RTW 2. No reason before your team assembled.
RTR VII was a great mod which I have played for a huge amount of hours. If you can do it even better than that one, I would be your eternal fan

Just wanted to thank you and everyone on the RTR team for the effort! I'm very much looking forward to R2TR - bashing people with phalanxes in multiplayer does get boring after a while.

Jam is one of the most helpful and effective modders I know. My full confidence in the future of Realistic Simulation rests with him and the entire RTR team!

Now that we have cavalry able to dismount and fight as infantry, I think Oathsworn can be depicted properly being both good cavalrymen and heavy infantry.

Just wondering, what is the benifit of dismounting cavalry, and in which situations is this smart?

Some more historical advantages would also be that a flanking charge was often more effectively delivered on foot; the cavalry would ride to their position, dismount, and prepare for the charge. This was done because of the difficulty to fight and maneuver on a horse without any type of modern furnishing (not even a saddle!)

Another advantage was before/during a cavalry vs cavalry melee; same reason, incredibly difficult to fight on horse back. Celts, Iberians, Romans, Iranians, Greeks; everyone done this, it was common practice, but as "shock" cavalry developed into a more effective arm, it became less necessary (you wouldn't see 2nd C BCE Roman Eqvites doing it often, or Alexander's and his Diadochi's Xystophoroi); this is also so for the 1st point I mentioned.
