What would class as an early "legion"

Hey, been thinking about this lately, what would you use as your main Roman force "pre Marius", I was thinking along the lines of 8 to 10 Hastaia (sp) 1 General, 4 cav, 4 skirmishers/archers. as below

x= Hastaia, A= skirmishers , C= cav and G= general

well id prefer my heavy inf in the middle and hoarses on the flanks charge your men in the enemy and have you cavaly come up behind them to push the enemy back further it works every time
