Default CTD what fixed all of them for me

All credit goes to Zonks40 as he was the one that told me about it. A little program called CFF explorer. He brought to my attention that Rtw can't use more than 2GB's of memory and thus when it hits 2GB it crashes. I used to always get crashes after big battles or after about an hours worth of playing until I tried cff explorer. It allows the game to use more than 2GB of memory and since using it I've yet to have a single CTD from battles or length of time playing, the game does seem to run a bit better too. here's how to use it. and again TYVM Zonks40.
    1. google cff explorer and download
    2. install it
    3. make a copy of RomeTW-BI.exe'
    3. right click on 'RomeTW-BI.exe'
    4. choose 'Open with CFF Explorer'
    5. in the left tree click on 'File Header'
    6. in the right window click on 'click here' in the 'Characteristics' row
    7. in the appearing window check the box in the line 'App can handle >2gb address space'
    8. click 'OK' - button
    9. click on 'save' icon
    10. Run the game as usual.
I'm not saying this is a fix for every CTD but I have yet to have one, hope it helps

If this helps i'm going to give you a lifetime of rep, because the game always crashes for me after hour long battles, wich makes is pretty much unplayable for me. (:

    I've 'converted' all three exes.

I don't know if they all will function at the moment though.

If this works, z28Man, you deserve a nobel prize.

Arh nice i have this program its good didn't know the 2gb rules mattered here but definatley give it a go nice work...Just a update for me the CFF won't recognise the short cut which is strange because i use this method with other games..maube the Large Addressware may work does the same thing..

@mav61 it worked with my shortcuts, just right click and open with cff explorer but like I said I did it to all of them just to be safe, I didn't make any back ups either ^_^ but you probably should make backups like the instructions say just in case

@Sillius tyvm but all the credit goes to Zonks40 for telling me about it. I just thought it would be a good idea to make an actual thread about CTD's since they are a big problem. If this works well enough the moderators should make a sticky about it

Have you tried loading the entire game into a ram drive? I don't have enough to do so, but I wonder if it would help.

This is for Skyrim, but it works for any game. Credit still goes to the OP, but I found this easier to follow (:

Gentlemen, I am sorry, but I must close this thread and discussion as it is against the TOS of this site to discuss any means of altering the exe of any TW game.
I know, it sucks. But I got my hands slapped for doing this myself a while ago, and I don't want anyone else getting into trouble. I do hope that sometime soon CA\TWC will let up on this restriction, because there are some tricks that can make RTW function much better on newer PC's and OS's.
