    Default Pope Giannis

    Just a question.
During my campaign, the new Pope elected was named Giannis. I made a research but I found nothing of this name in Italian or Western European history, although it reminds me of the Italian name: Giovanni. Does anyone know the origin of Gianni and why was it chosen as a possible name for Popes.
    Thanks!

It is a form of John. There are a lot of Greeks with the name Giannis.

Most popes after Gregorio will have pretty made-up regnal names without much resemblance to anything historical. I don't know why, but they do.

I believe that Medieval doesn't give Cardinals regnal names when they become pope, that is, they keep their randomly generated name, based on faction of origin.

According to Wiki, Gianni is an Italian form of John, Giannis is a Greek form of John. I imagine that CA made a mistake in either the original research done or while typing the name into the names file that turned Gianni into Giannis.

About the first part, I am 100% sure that a cardinal changes his name, when he becomes the Pope. Giannis was named as Helmut 'Something", when he was a Preferatii.

Anyway, it seems that Giannis is indeed a greek name. I suppose that the CA got a bit confused with the names .
