Wonder what type of unit players will choose. Will you go for the traditional mounted general or you choose an Infantry unit or even a Royal Peltats unit? Would like to hear from you guys what your plans are for your campaign.

Myself i think i will try to go with an Infantry general and have him fighting on the front lines and not like a coward on the horse and stand behind lines. My other general unit will be Royal Peltast to aid with missile fire.

Your foolish to have your general fighting and then die mid through causing mass routs.

Plus cavalry general is more mobile so he can run the battlefield inspiring men .

Definitley on horse. I think it's a nice feature to be given the option but my immediate thought was "Why?", because in the end I will chose the cavalry 100% 90% of the time.

I think having a general as a phalanx unit embedded in the middle of the battle line could be very useful. Here are some reasons:

    1) enemy will try to target the general. Right on to the front of his phalanx (they won't break through as the general unit is elite)
    2) He will be relatively safe in the middle of the battle line + his command radius will be centered in the middle of your army
    3) it will make me feel more attached to the bloke!

Well I will have one general on foot just because I want him to be a beast (Suebi), the rest on horse for practicality. I am going to just be having fun with my foot gen.

On horse, if he need to fight on foot, he will dismount.

Spartan Elite Hoplite as a General's bodyguard. Just because he's on foot don't mean he will always die when he gets into combat. As long as you're not one of those guys who will make him just charge and attack every one he will survive. Remember, guys, Hoplite Generals might not even fight in the frontline. Didn't you notice the standard-bearer taking two steps back when the Hoplites were told to go into Phalanx? This could be the case with the General as well. He might fight frontline in the Phalanx, he might not. Regardless, the General's stats are always just a little better than the rest of the guys to prolong his life and stop him from dying so soon. So as long as you fight the right units, you'll be ok.
I personally invite you to check out my complete combat overhaul which will give you a completely new Rome 2 experience:

Cavalry is definitely going to be the most used unit. However, I am wondering the uses of having a different unit for the general.

As I'm playing as Suebi, will most likely pick infantry. Plus you also have the higher number than a calv unit

I think it depends highly upon which faction you are. You've got your small mounted bodyguard for the Romans who require a mobile command; on the opposite end of the spectrum you have your 'barbarian' factions where usually their leaders led from the front; then you have your Makedonian/Successors general with companions to who is like a cross of the two, where he can also be used as shock cavalry.

I don't know really... all of them have their pros and cons, I suppose it depends on how you fight doesn't it?

@historyaswas - I suppose though, the general may not be as vulnerable as we think since his stats will probably be through the roof if you put him with a unit of elite infantry.

I like my crazy officers of republican Roman style the mobile and cool-headed tactician, who, when hits the fan, turns into a ferocious lunatic (e.g. Decius Mus, Siccius Dentatus, Manlius Torquatus - admittedly all extreme cases, but still fantastic stuff!).

I think I would like a ranged unit as my general, that way he can give support to my troops support and not risk getting killed

I feel that may be the most risky. If the fight is going south the general wont be able to run or fight it out. Ranged units will get ripped apart by the enemy. Although there may be some uses for that, such as in TATW. However we won't have as much general spam....

On horse, ofc. For a better look at the battlefield. I have to think of the general's needs.

for field armies, would certainly choose a cavalry unit, mainly because the general needs to get around to help out units with abilities etc, but generally because he is more flexible that way

if I had a garrison/defensive army, inside a city with walls, I wouldn't choose cavalry for that, better to have an extra unit of infantry imo, but depends if I would gear an army like that

Since you the player are actually acting as the general, your general on the field does not have to see as much of the battlefield as he would in real life. However I prefer to have him on horseback behind the lines for several reasons, he can help me spot the enemy by taking a position up high behind my lines (taking the new LOS into consideration here) and also he can go to a threatened sector to bolster morale at a critical juncture. That plus I don't want his death contributing to a rout of my units. My general's will gain glory by winning battles, not one-on-one melee fights.

Gotta be infantry. My generals will either provide glory for my Empire or they will die.
