    Default The Wire

The next season of HBO's excellent, gritty police series, "The Wire" is starting tonight (9/10). Anyone else a fan of the show? I don't have time to really watch TV anymore, but whatever breaks I get are going to be strategically timed so I can catch this show. I love the way social issues and concerns about a big, poor, metropolitan area are woven into the complex storylines. Also, unlike the cliched detective shows like CSI, the work done in this show really seem realistic; the cops have to work with a tiny budget, working against the politics of those in charge pushing for quick arrests and statistical gains, instead of formulating long-term strategies to combat crime. Finally, as with any really good show, the characters are totally three-dimensional, and their personalities and motivations are examined a beautiful manner. Anyway, anyone else into this show?

I've seen little of this show, but I have a lot of interest in it. I hear a lot of good things about it, and its a pity I since I have HBO. I'm just procrastinating 'cuz I haven't seen it from the beginning.

I would highly recommend it...I think the DVDs of the previous seasons are out. The first episode of the current season was really good, too. I think one of the best things about the show is that is intimately shows the workings of an urban world that is totally alien to so many people (at least it was for me). I think most people are unaware of this side of urban, black America, and it's hard to realize just how much of a stranglehold the drug trade has on the lives of the people within it. The show brings it home in a very realistic and obviously well-researched manner.

I hear it's a really good show, but I've only seen bits and pieces of it. I'm gonna have to rent the first couple of seasons and check it out.

Don't need to take my word on it...here's an article from Slate today about why The Wire is the best TV show ever. In history.
