Default control all cities one family

Don't know if this has been asked before, couldn't find it anyway.

If I start a campaing as one of the roman families, In how many cities will I be able to build. Will I control all cities and the other two families will only have armies? Will the senate control all cities? Or will each family has one city and Rome belongs to the senate (since Rome starts with four regions).

    The same counts for Carthage.

I'm not completely certain but, if memory serves correctly, you will control everything the chosen faction has up until the point another family overtakes you, at which point you lose the game.

^^^ not quite, if another family becomes too powerful, or you too weak, then there will be a civil war... Not end game

maybe major ai factions could also end up in civil war and give you the perfect chance to strike.

Don't you also risk civil war if your own faction becomes too powerful (breeding resentment), forcing you to keep the balance of power rather than accaparate all power?

And I'd really like to read more about the barbarians confederations that apparently replace vassals, and possibly the internal politics of "civilized" factions.
