Sparta : strategies on the battlefield

When the game comes out, i'm considering starting as Sparta.
Though i'm not sure if the unit roster has enough variation, besides Hoplites

- What strategies can you use as Sparta when laying siege ?
- Which strategies can you use as Sparta against an archer heavy army ?
- Which strategies can you use as Sparta against an army with a lot of cavalry ?

The tradition that made them lose most of their wars for 200 years prior to the start of the game?

Sparta only started winning again (briefly) when they reformed their military to the same standard as the rest of Greece.

I prefer to use tactics that win. Like deploying my pikemen in the center and enveloping with my medium infantry, which will probably have to be modded in since CA teleported this Sparta in from 500 BC.

You do realize at the game's start (272 BC), Sparta was (in real life) still using traditional hoplites, right?

I love the look of the classical Spartan elites. The screenshot with the traditional hoplite helmets, the horsehair crests, the shiny armor. Screw winning tactics, I can't wait to unleash the fury of the good 'ol Spartan Elite hoplites in a nice custom battle, and in a campaign. Sparta will be my first campaign since I am fond of their military and way of life.

Strategies for Sparta -or any faction- are not predicated on any historical precedent, but on how capably CA codes the AI. Saying you're going to use their historical tactic of pressing the right (which was not peculiar to Sparta, btw, but was a common occurrence in all phalanx, due to the warrior's proclivity to seek the shelter of the shield to the man beside him) is meaningless until we see how the AI handle's combat on release day. Virtually zero inspired tactics have every been required in a Total War game, not even the much improved Shogun 2.

As I have been told by those much more knowledgeable about the Spartans than myself, there will very likely be a lot more variation than one would expect. Of course, we'll see Spartans in hoplite and Makedonian style phalanxes, but we will also see perioikoi and helots taking on other roles such as archers, light infantry, cavalry etc. Also, don't forget about mercenaries!

I wonder if the hoplites and phalanxes get missle defence bonus from the front? I would probably use the traditional units as the tanks and hire merc cavalry and missile units. and they attack so much better now(the new video was kinda cool, especially the last part where it showed the attack) compare to rome 1 where they were practically standing still. so tanking units with a good bite to them

I bet spartan elite units would be the supreme city street fighting units as it would almost be impossible to flank them.
