    Default The Last Night

Given the number of british people, i'm totally flabbergasted i couldn't find a thread on this already (there may be one, and i may simply be stupid, if this be the case i apologise!)

Today was of course, the Last Night of the Proms, a great festival of music, and in the case of the last night, of britishness and national pride...

this thread is dedicated to the last night, and the interesting selections in the music this year, but allow, i beg, a little digression on the subject of flags!

The last night is famous for a mischievous audience, a humerous conductor, horn calls, buzzing noises, hooters, and of course, flag waving, with flags of all nations, and many other standards as well seen at the Royal Albert Hall and the proms in the Park.

it always both amuses and annoys me the flags you see...
we get the traditional national flags, and lovcal flags... we see the Union Flag, the Cross of St George, St Andrews Saltire, we rarely see St Davids Cross, but the Red Dragon is much in evidence. We see that Star Spangled Banner, and the Tricolour, and the Southern Cross...
last year we saw the Flag of the European Union, this year, of all things, the flag of NATO! The arms of Hanover, and Normandy are regular visitors, as is the White Ensign...
alas many people presume to fly the Royal Standard, and even more prevalent, the Royal Arms of Scotland, both of which are reserved for HM alone. football flags to make a common appearence, and it annoys me so much to see ENGLAND plastered across the Cross of St George, or worse the Union Flag, as if people couldn't tell... (worse still that bloody blue and white shield with 3 blue lions, the lions are gold on red dammit GOLD ON RED!!!)

This year, one i've not seen before at the proms, and one i must admit i only recognised thanks to Medieval Total War (!!!) The Flag of the Holy See (The Vatican City State/The Papal States) in a very prominant position

however, my award for most controversial flag this year goes not to those brave people in Swansea waving Union Flags in a sea of red dragons, not to the person in scotland waving the rainbow flag but those odd people waving a remix of the Union Flag, with the blue background recoloured PINK! i don't know if they were gay, simply hated scottish people, or were very very bad when it comes to washing, but to me, an unofficialy defaced flag is incredibly annoying and offensive, especially when it happens to be the Union Flag, that proud mix of the 3 sovereign states that make up the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the Kingdoms of England and Scotland and the territory of Northern Ireland)

moving away from my digression, an interesting russian theme to tonights last night, and wasn't that baritone stunning? a pity there was no one to solo rule britannia though... i always like those concerts where they actually sing more than the first verse...
