Icon5 Did they fix these things from Rome 1?

    - Fantasy units

    - Millions of tiny AI armies spamming the map without generals, instead of full-stack AI armies led by generals (which would be much better and more realistic)

    - Missile/ranged units that didn't exhaust ammo on each other before infantry lines closed and engaged?

    Anyone know? Thanks!

Have you not been paying any attention at all? I mean it's not like Rome 1 is a 9 year old game with 4 other Total War games between it and its successor...

    1) mostly. Obviously when you are dealing with thousands of years there are things that you have to extrapolate and others that that had to embellish for gameplay. But I doubt you see head hurlers, flaming pigs, or screeching women again.

    2) that's what the army limit is supposed to do. We will see if it worked.

    3) no idea.

I actually watched a documentary that showed the Germanics that fought against Gaias Marius had women with them who screamed and made sure the men didn't retreat. They would pick up weapons and fight until they're absolutely dead.

Flaming pigs are confirmed, but they are historically accurate, if not at least historically plausible

Thanks guys, these were the things that bugged me most from Rome 1.

I don't count the flaming pigs so much as fantasy units. I was thinking more of the headhurlers, screaching women, and the Egyptian units that were not accurate for the time, i.e. non-Hellenistic.

So it remains unknown whether the ranged units issue has been resolved...

At the very least they'd be historically plausiable as others have pointed out.

Fantasy would be something like Dragons and wizards.

Not sure where you've been but Army limits has been talked to death on this forum for months.

    According to Jack

Archers -> Good decent missile unit but lacks Armour piercing weapons so they are less effective against heavier opponents

Javeliners -> High damage and Armour piercing capability but very short ranged

Slingers -> Low damage but greatest range and ammo out of them all.

The way I see it slingers will be the best choice for factions facing off against eastern factions that have lots of light units like Parthia.

Though I've never seen an issue with archers running out of ammo before the lines closed. If the two sides are marching towards each other at least the archers would burn 1/4 of their ammo.

Thanks. What I meant was shouldn't the ranged units continually fire at each other to the point of expending all their ammo before the "close range" units like infantry closed on each other and engaged? That sounds the most realistic for a battle in those days. It was a major fault in Rome 1.

    Fantasy units
I don't think so. Do you remember the film '300'? That ogre the Persians have who cuts off human heads with his bone-arms has been confirmed as a unique unit for Parthia. Atlanteans with tridents are also reputed to be making an appearance, can't WAIT!

    1) No. So far different reviewers and CA staff have confirmed the presence of amazons, war dogs, screeching women and incendiary pigs. However, most of the units in the game seem to be portrayed in an extremely historically accurate manner.

    2) Yes. There is an army limit now, and all armies require a general to move and exist.

    3) No idea. So far, based on a few unscripted and unaltered videos, the AI does look promising. In a certain video, it holds reserves and uses skirmishers.
