Anyone else think have a mercenary unit of Myrmidons would be cool? They could be an elite unit of hoplites recruitable in Greece.

    Are they historically accurate?...no!
Does the rule of cool apply?...Hell yeah!!

As cool as they would be, 1000 years out of date
But yeah, I'd definitely be popping over to Greece a lot to pick these guys up regularly if they were put in.
I heard somewhere that these guys were actually historically accurate. Obviously not in this time period and not the way the movie portrayed them but I believe they were legit.

I heard something about Amazonian infantry and archers being in the game. They were before this period as well so god knows what kind of stuff we'll be seeing.

The idea that the Amazons actually existed is extremely dubious.

Might also have cannons appear, they are as far away as the Myrmidons from the timeline.

Myrmadons fight with shield and spear in a hoplite formation. Not exactly the realms of fantasy for this games time frame is it.

Myrmidons are a MYTHICAL elite army of Achilles, from Bronze Age Greece. If they existed:

a)They would not fight as hoplites, since hoplite warfare evolved in the 7-8th century bC.
b)They would be very overpowered since they would be 1000 years old immortals.

There was no Myrmidon state in Thessaly at the timeframe (or ever). Homer just needed a badass army for his most badass hero.

Why not add mammoths to the game? Or give the Suebi Scandinavian moose riders... Although Scandinavian moose riders would be awesome.

On the other hand, it is not impossible that a band of mercenaries or elite soldiers might've chosen to call themselves Myrimdons.

Might make a good name for a Greek army, actually.

Myrmidons means ant-men as they wore black clothes , and Achilles was king of Ftia in Thessaly, maybe we'll se them in an Ancient Age TW set with Hittites, Myceneans, Egyptians etc....

On my original post I stated that they could be an elite hoplite unit of mercenaries. I didn't mention anything about them belonging to a state. They could just be a bit more interesting than hiring generic 'veteran hoplite' mercenaries.

Or, rather than actual Bronze Age (and out of place, in my opinion) Myrmidons, you could get an elite hoplite mercenary unit that are named after the Myrmidons, with some unique and rather flashy armour. Everyone's happy

I don't even get the fuss here. If you don't like the unit, don't use it if it's in the game. Like Horse archers, I never liked them so I never used them.

With the introduction of Land/sea battles, I would like a Myrmidon unit so I can recreate a scene from Troy for a good laugh. No need to be serious about everything, guys.

I don't know bur it doesn't sound too bad. I mean surely, some Greek elite company could have named themselves after the myrmidons right ?
That doesn't mean that we would have 2000 year old ant-men running around on the battlefield but just a band of very elite hoplites taking on the name of a long gone mythological army to honour days of olden glory.

You can do that yourself by building up a hoplite-focused army and name them Myrmidons, since we can name our armies.

Second, the OP was not talking about mercs or ancient re-enactors but actual Myrmidons in the Hellenistic age.

Ok let's take this back a step. This is a historical game not a mythological one. Historically, the myrmidons may have existed as an elite force fighting in the siege of Troy. Mythologically, they were immortal ant-men under the command of an undefeatable warrior called Achilles.

We do not believe in mythology and thus we do not include it in our view of history. On the other hand, the ancient greeks did and for them Mythology=History. They actually believed the myrmidons were ant men ! We are not even sure they existed. Not sure what point I'm trying to make here though...

I'm glad to see that some people are showing common sense to this suggestion. It was just an idea I thought might be cool.
However if CA don't add this unit I will cancel my pre order.. Then I will order the game immediately and cancel that one as well
