Best rally point yet![]()
that was an amazing episode. it had everything....
- a SNES
- a lot of "dats"Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
- Brian Blessed
- Phalanx, finally!
- nice close up fighting animations
- different match ups and battle situations to show combat mechanics and a unit strengths and weakness
- aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand another cute CA girl :3
I don't hate but I don't post any criticisms here at TWC as it's almost as futile as the official forums to get a decent discussion.
From the footage shown it ensures me that I'll buy (Was questioning if I was even going to buy R2) it when it's dirt cheap.
Cheers.
炸鸡
RTW had by far the most arcadey, high-speed combat of the entire series.i Hope it will take a while maybe just like rome 1 or napoleon total wa
CA needs competition.
The campaign battles took far longer then the mutiplayer battles in rome 1 imo.
Poor guy got crushed under an elephant

After I see how nice CA made phalanx, so I ask myself, much more then before, what to hell they are smoked in the time they decided to let the roman formations always run.

You can make them walk. You still have the option. They just made the default animation the run animation. They probably did this because they believe the majority of players always use the run feature. I agree that I would prefer to have walk as the default animation instead of run. At least you can still run hidden units as long as you are a certain distance away from the enemy.

it actually kinda makes sense - they run because you change their formation. usually, units moved faster when changing formations.. only problem i see is actual running speed itself.. it should not be done by sprinting, but double pace (slightly faster walk), true running should be reserved for charges.
I agree with you - I prefer the always walk and run if I want them too - I don't need my forces tired by the time they engage. Rather walk in advance and then run the last little bit for the charge.
About the video - Awesome vid. Still surprised how well the phalanx did vs a flanking cav and a infantry in front. And I agree less 'puffing' from missle impact IMO (but might be a mod thing in the future). Same with always run; maybe a mod can change that.
Video looks pretty good, not sure what the excitement is over these Units, to me they appear to behave pretty similar to RTW1.
The way soldiers run off with their heads down makes me laugh, if anything, RTW2 will be comedic relief at his best!
Rome 1's phalanx battles were not anywhere near as detailed. It was really just very low poly count spears jabbing back and forth, where as it looks like now the combat is far more individualized.
Not to mention that they will be better by default due to 10 years of graphical advancements.
Nice video,..its zoomed in...
Really hate those those fog that appear, i hope CA remove them...
Wouldn't it be sick if the men were all chanting in deep voice as the marched forward before they engaged? Like in 2:55 of the RP episode; if they were chanting something like this http://youtu.be/bpLtXIlkyYA?t=1m37s I think it would fit great!! Surely they've recorded some kind of audio like this?
If my Suebi troops take over sparta, would I be able to use the phalanx with my german troops or no?
It pretty much smashed much of the fears that we've been having lately about pike phalanx units. Pike vs Pike is going to be much more interesting now that they can be essentially locked into single combat with each other (as opposed to RTW in which the pikemen would stop 2 pike-lengths away from each other and poke every 5 minutes. The 20-second rout levy pikes was worrying. Hopefully, the victorious unit was some high level phalangite unit like Royal Pikemen or something.
The animations of the two phalanx engaging each other is very good. I hope it will be possible to let non-phalanx unit engage slowing in melee like this instead of charging. Or at least possible to give other melee unit some kind of "careful engagement posture" using the phalanx formation as a basis.
