    Default AMD cpu question

Hi guys if you had t pick from 4 AMD cpu's what would it be?

Now I'm not worried about price. Just want to know what would go best with a GTX 760 gpu

AMD FX 4350 4 cores Black Edition (4.2/4.3GHz)

    Phenom II X4 980 ‘Black Edition’(3.7GHz

AMD FX 6350 6 cores Black Edition (3.9/4.2GHz

For Total War (what I assume you want it for), AMD CPUs are awful. They're loaded up on threads (lots of weak threads) and a single superthread would be ideal (intel is the closest to this with their quad core i5s), so AMD CPUs are pretty much the opposite of what you want. Here is a chart, anyway. You'll need to scroll down quite a bit.

    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html

P.S. you only listed 3 CPUs.

I used to roll with a GTX260 and AMD FX6100. Shogun 2 played well enough with DX9 and everything on ultra. The RTW mod RS2 was barely playable though.

Then I upgraded to a GTX 660 and Shogun 2 or RS2 both on ultra play like a charm.

In my case the GPU upgrade made a big big difference. Still got my FX6100 and Im perfectly fine with it.

Yes I know Intel has top notch cpu's, but my MOBO doesn't support it. I really don't want to waste money on a new MOBO because I have never installed one
Then spend money on a new operating system and ram. Just getting a new AMD cpu in the 150-190 price range would work for me for now.

depends on your motherboard if you dont have a black socket on the motherboard you wont be able to run any FX series chips at all, you never listed your components

As many 900 series motherboards and 800 series boards have white aka the old AM3 socket and black AM3+ socket. Some vendors dont even bother to diferentiate between the two.

yea 4+1 phase power design with any of the higher end AMD chips that board is likely to go up in smoke.

That said it does support the FX series CPUs but considering many 4+1 phase motherboards on the AMD side are well known to have the VRMs catch fire or die I wouldnt recommend running the 8 core chips on them a 95w chip would be a better idea. but regardless in most games the FX 4000 and FX 6000 series barely out perform the older Phenom II lineup your just gaining more CPU cores really. If you want a real performance boost the only option for Total War games is intel

    http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/201...-8350-review/6

for long term the a 95w chip is a better idea
for best performance the 8350 is the only option regardless in Total war games those chips are still going to be nearly 30-50% slower than an Intel system. All other games AMD is behind depending on the game by only a small amount but Total War just so overwhelmingly favors Intel its not even funny.

Thanks again for all the help. I think you're right, and I found a great deal on a Intel I5-4670k with a GigaByte Z87X-UD4H MOBO
Now I'm just going to start watching countless videos on how to replace a MOBO and hope I can figure it out

if you want to save money and dont plan to overclock get the i5 4430 and an H87 motherboard. should save you well over $100. If you do plan to overclock then carry on.

Nope. just looking to upgrade from what I have now. To a somewhat decent gaming rig. Right now I just want to switch out this old MOBO and AMD processor.

ALright give me a few minutes and ill piece together some CPU + MOBO + RAM combinations you can pick what fits your budget.

    Cheapest Option
    CPU: Intel Core i5-4430 3.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($174.99 @ Newegg)
    Motherboard: MSI H87-G43 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($89.99 @ Newegg)
    Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($62.05 @ Newegg)
    Total: $327.03

    Budget Optimized
Make sure to buy the combo for the CPU + Mobo
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...ID=3938566&SID
    CPU: Intel Core i5-4570 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($199.99 @ Newegg)
    Motherboard: MSI Z87-G43 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($115.91 @ Newegg)
    Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($62.05 @ Newegg)
    Total: $354.95

    Performance Oriented
Make sure to purchase the CPU and Motherboard as a combo deal on newegg it saves some money.
    Combo Link http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...D=3938566&SID=
    CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($229.99 @ Newegg)
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($159.99 @ Newegg)
    Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($62.05 @ Newegg)
    Total: $437.03

    Maximum Performance
CPU + MOBO Combo deal http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...D=3938566&SID=
    CPU: Intel Core i7-4770 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($309.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($184.99 @ Newegg)
    Memory: Corsair Vengeance LP 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($84.99 @ Newegg)
    Total: $579.97

The performance oriented build is the best in terms of cost to quality and features. Just make sure for any of these builds that when its put together you toggle XMP in the BIOS.

An after market cooler is also a good idea the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO is a solid choice for stock systems. I would actually recommend an after market cooler period as Haswell does run hot. That said, I would recommend the cooler period to help keep temps down. While not necessary its still a good idea in order to maintain peak performance as the stock Intel coolers are pretty much garbage.

IF you wish to order an after market heatsink let me know I can browse around and find solid options for less money.

First off I want to thank you for helping me out with all of this, and it's been a huge help. You're a saint my friend. lol

I'm really liking the i5-4670k and the Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD3H MOBO setup.
What would you say about this MOBO GigabyteGA-Z87MX-D3H
For 109$ to go with the 4670k? If it's OK it would save me about 49$

Also since I have never switched out a MOBO before. Will my operating system still work with the new MOBO? It's on the hard drive so I'm guessing it would.

Not worth it pay attention to the combo deal

That mobo you picked isnt $109 its $124 with a $15 mail in rebate so you still have to pay $124 UP FRONT

the build I put together has a combo deal the link above all the parts = $159 for the motherboard -$25 combo deal = $135 for the motherboard your idea saves you $10 and drops your motherboard for Mid to High end down to entry lvl.

    Just for clarification

    CPU: 4670k = $229.99
    MOBO: Gigabyte GA-Z87MX-D3H = $124.99
    RAM: Gskill Ares 2x4GB $62.05

Total Cost: $407 after all promo codes etc with MIR which will take over a month to get back you save another $15

So $407 up front $392 after a month maybe two even then its not a rebate check its a pre paid debit card with $15 on it to get it as cash you pay a fee at the ATM lolz

Vs my build speced at $437 with the CPU + MOBO as a combo deal you saved only $30 up front but went from High end to entry level on the motherboard.

If you really need to save money this is the better bet

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...=Combo.1394990

of course if your CASE only supports Micro ATX motherboards then speak up.
