If you watch the Religion video carefully, you wll see at the end that some knights charge in with lances. The camera then shows the same knights using swords once fully engaged with the enemies.

Wasn't that in RTW?
"Non, je n'ai point de réponse à faire à votre général que par la bouche de mes canons et de mes fusils."
"No, I have no answer for your general than by the mouths of my canons and rifles,"

when did they do that in RTW? as far as i knew they only ever used the spears to fight, even when wading through a division of infantry. How did they change to swords?
If a unit has a secondary weapon it will sometimes switch to it(sword, axe, knife etc.).You can press "alt" and click on the enemy, you units will charge with secondary weapons.
Thanks for the tip, Id seen that with ranged weapons, but ive never had it work with the heavy cavalry. Does it work with say, Generals Bodyguard, or Cataphracts as well?
depends on the cavalry type, some horse unit only gets one primary weapon(mostly spears), for Cataphracts you definitely want them to use the secondary weapon in close combat, because they use mace, which is armor piercing
how pray tell is a bludgeoning weapon armour piercing?Originally Posted by warblah

Bludgeoning disregards armor. Platemail can keep a sword from cutting you open, but it can't keep a mace from breaking your ribs.Originally Posted by Tabell

Probably because armor becomes less relevant.Originally Posted by Tabell
Wasn't chainmail good against slashing attacks from swords, but horrible against arrows and bludgeoning? Am I totally wrong?
