Apart from the ships disintegrating when they are rammed, I love the look of it. Water looks amazing and the storm there was really cool.

The ships do seem to move very quickly and it looks odd because all they have to push them through the water are a bank or two of oars. Not saying the speed is too much but it just looks weird.

    Liked the unit cards too.

Doesn't look too bad. Ships move a bit fast though.

Modding will fix all the arcadey speeds and collisions hopefully.

A lot of fantastic things in the vid, that have been covered. I don't know or care about the minutiae of historical accuracy, so whatever.

The bad, i'd like to echo, is the ramming. The ramming ship approaches a stationary ship at high speed, impacts.. and comes to a stop. None of the crew seem to be jolted in the slightest. Umm... I don't have sound playing so I can't tell if there's a sound, but the visuals of it seemed fairly silly to me.

Then there's the ship "destruction" when it is destroyed by ramming. It flies apart into fragments (like a gate that is destroyed in Shogun 2) and the soldiers are tossed around like ragdolls - again like the men atop a gate in Shogun 2 at the point when it reaches 100% damage. They go flying all over, and it's kind of comedic.

I'd much prefer the way shogun 2 ships react when their hull reaches zero. They don't explode (unless hit by something explosive). Instead their hull and outline gets increasingly battered until the ship sinks and the soldiers jump over the side. Personally i'd consider that far preferable than magical exploding ship syndrome.

Other than that.. well, it looked fairly amazing. Shogun 2 naval battles with upgraded graphics and hopefully less tedium. No more sailing in circles waiting for your infinite ammo bowmen aboard your kobaya to slowly kill off enough crew to route the enemy ship (or set it on fire).

Reducing the speed of ships will alleviate the first concern (collision reactions) somewhat, but the destruction animation is not great.

The ramming is very static. I don't see why they couldnt have just added some sort of jiggle to the ship rocking it back and forth when it gets rammed but not destroyed. that's all really, other than that I understand the technical limitations and am happy with the look of the naval fights.

Good point. Small detail but would add a lot of life to naval battles.

It is a pity that there are such collision animations and no bursting oars, but honestly, no one expected anything better. The big plus for me is the ability to board with more than one ship at a time. Setting ships in line to board a large ship in the Shogun was annoying.

Not a fan of the Viking longships from a thousand-plus years in the future. Also they should have shown a full naval battle, not just a few snippets from two separate battles.
Aelfwine, then, spoke out and valiantly declared: 'Let us call to mind those declarations we often uttered over mead, when from our seat we heroes in hall would put up pledges about tough fighting; now it can be proved who is brave. I am willing to make my lineage known to all, that I was from a substantial family in Mercia. My grandfather was called Ealhelm, a wise nobleman blessed with worldly wealth. The thanes among that people shall not reproach me for my wanting to get out of this army, to make my way home, now that my lord leader is lying hacked down in battle. To me that is the greatest grief: he was both my kinsman and my lord." Then he moved forward and turned his attention to revenge, so that with his spear he struck a seaman among the army so that he lay dead among the ground, destroyed by his weapon. Then he exhorted his comrades, his friends and companions, that they should advance.

Apparently they dropped the idea of multiple ships per unit. It was mentioned also in some QA from last Soho event . I think also that breakable oars would be bad idea. With so much ramming action it would be too easy to immobilize ships. On the other side those "Viking" ships look badass!

Really? Where's the source for that? If true that sucks.

Some sort of dynamic ship damage would be nice and individual units moving/reacting more smoothly in ship/sea environment but all in all ingredients are there and should work fine if CA keeps improving and tweaking it this fall. (remember how Empire's navy battle was in demo? shivers....)

Those magic abilities would be better if spell's reload time would be a longer.

Why javelins in the air are white and not black, I dont really know, there should not be much difference in spotting them.

I just have a question since i now little of naval warfare, well, not exactly naval warfare as this doesn't concern ships per se

But! if one unit boards the enemy's ship, doesn't it all become a huge formless mess where the winner is basically the unit with superior stats?

I hope that ships do have weight this time when they hit enemy ships...
Those ships that dont broke should also feel shock that something hit them...

Is there an animation where some ships only tilt enemy ship sideways causing it to turn upside down by itself...

I absolutely love this. The graphics look great, the ramming is cool but my only complaint is that the boat speed seems exaggerated.

I'd also like to see more of an 'impact' animation on the ship that is being rammed and not get destroyed. Right now it just looks like the animation suddenly comes to an end.

Yes, there should be impact when ships ram each other...

Aside from that, where are multiple ships per unit???

I think it looks awesome. Main goal for a game is fun and entertainment. This will definitely do. Suebi ships look cool and I like the exploding things of the side of some other ships I saw.

I think it looks really good, but naval battles (even when done well like this) just don't really interest me. I wish they did, especially since I plan on playing as Carthage by the end of September.
