Character Rules The following are the character rules. While they are not written rigidly and as mere guidelines, any abuse of such which spoils playing experience for others will be dealt strictly.

    - Each player may have up to five active main characters at any time. The characters can be of a single family (natural or adopted) or different ones. However, bonuses can be carried forward only within the family. You can also relate your characters to other players' characters after discussing it with them.

    - Since we have done away with traits, you are given liberty to design your own characters, including describing their personal attributes. We kindly request players to try make characters as realistic as possible.

    - Of the five active characters, only 2 can hold offices. Please note that the two offices cannot be of equal standing, one has to be lower than the other.

    - Characters may commit suicide by poison, which was the common way.

    - A death roll will happen when a character turns 70 and each year with a 50% chance of death and after with increasing odds (5% per year).

    - You need not register any auxiliary characters, and can introduce them and take them out at your discretion. However, auxiliary characters will accrue no income or any bonuses, and cannot hold offices or important positions. However, they can act on behalf of your main characters.

Register your character(s) and the family here. A brief description of your character and their family line would do. You can use the home threads for detailed description, as that thread will be used for roleplay.

    Xenophon
    Age:43
Xenophon was born into an old noble oligarchic family of Athens. With the increasing democratic bent of society, Xenophon's family lost prominence, wealth and standing, and the young man left Athens to make his fortune as a mercenary captain. After fighting for two decades in the armies of Carthage, Scicily, and getting involved in a Persian succession squabble, Xenophon has retired from his life as a mercanary and has returned to Athens to take up farming and politics.

    Themisticles
    Age: 30
Themisticles has reason to hate the city of Lacedaemon. In many ways, they have been the cause of all his life's suffering. Born in 460, the same year the first Peloponnese war began, Themisticles never knew a world where Sparta was not an enemy. Only three short years after his birth, his father, who was serving in the military as many Athenians were, lost his life to a Spartan spear at the Battle of Tanagra. As a middle class mother who'd just lost her source of income, his mother was forced to sell off their possessions until she was able to marry a lecherous old man with three other wives. Themisticles resented his stepfather a great deal, as the slimy fellow generally ignored him and mistreated his mother. When he was old enough, he ran away. The street life was hardly an improvement over the abusive household, so tracked down the only job available, around the age of 13, becoming a hand on a merchant ship that plowed the Mediterranean. He would go on to witness many great sights and grand cities, to walk the streets of Tyre and Syracuse, to sail from one end of the known world to the other. When he grew tired of travelling, he returned to the city of his birth and took an interest in politics. He began his trained as an ephebe, after which he began to speak regularly in the assembly and serve often as a juror, becoming noted for his hostile attitude towards Sparta and unquestioning support of Athenian interests in most other subjects.

    Aristocles
    Age - 50
Aristocles was brought up in Athens. He had traveled across Hellas with his father who was a captain of a ship. At the age of 20, he traveled to Sparta for military training under the pretense of being from Argos. There, he learned to appreciate what a disciplined army can accomplish. Later, he traveled across Greece as a military adviser to the Athenian allies and neutral states alike. At 50, he comes to Athens at last to join his two sons, elder who has completed his training, and the younger who is still in training. He is a diplomatic man who believes that everything is fair as long as Athens retains supremacy.

    Alexias
    Age - 25
The younger son of Aristocles. Schooled in Athens, and underwent training in both Athens and Corinth. He is a military man, and prefers to settle disputes with the Xiphos (sword) than diplomacy. He firmly believes in the doctrine that Athens with it current navy and a strong army can conquer Hellas someday.

    Lysandros
    Age - 18
Little is known about the younger son as he is still in training and yet to develop qualities.

    DEMETRIOS

    Age - 48

Demetrios comes from a family with a long military legacy. This fits his personality as well, since he is aggressive and eager person, always ready to defend his family and friends, or taking the fight to his enemies and rivals. At the same time, he is a very cool-minded and patient person, never making hasty decisions that might lead to worse. He is also very friendly person, although his bold voice is very intimidating. His militaristic and non-eloquent speech might inspire the troops, but at the same time he isn't very good at interacting with others. But his fighting abilities are excellent.

For his looks, he is your typical Greek nobleman. He has a big, curvy beard and medium-sized hair that don't go below the neck. But he is almost always clad in plain clothes, with little ornaments if ever. His face has a visible scar on the eyebrow and another one on his left cheek, and there is another scar on his hand and one on right leg, as a mark and proof of life-threatening situations in battle. Overall, he looks quite intimidating, with a muscleful body that was strongly built, and wide chests. This gets him into problems as unacquainted people think of him as a bully due to his looks, even though he is a friendly person. He is short in height though.

His wish is to become Strategos, and leave Athens with a large army.

    HERAKLIOS

    Age - 17

Heraklios is the only son of Demetrios. He was educated in military matters, which he upholds like the the rest of the family line. But unlike his father, he is a very eccentric, impatient young man who has a tendency to take all things happily and excitedly. He has not seen a fight yet, but he is brave and wishes to lead an army himself. He is also very friendly to everyone, leading his own huge group of friends, spending times in taverns and gymnasiums.

For his looks, he is a fine-looking man, popular with young men and many women. He is averagely built, neither fat nor muscleful. He is tall though, unlike his father.

Not much is known about his objective in life, but everyone knows that he is a very ambitious young man.

    Thermistocles "The One-Eye". Age: 62.
A grizzled veteran of Athen's many wars on land, sea, and in the assembly, The One-Eye has seen it all and done most of it too. A scarred, gruesome man to behold, he prizes Athens above anything else in his life. This is only to be expected, the man has given his right eye, his left hand, and three sons for the city in it's various campaigns with never a moments regret. He walks with a limp in his left leg, a souvenir from a Theban peltast. The One-Eye is a fearsome man; ruthless, brutal and uncompromising but also just as fierce in his loyalties to his city, his family and his friends he will not balk at anything if it will secure Athen's place in the greater scheme of things. Now into the winter of his years, he is too old and too wounded to campaign in the field anymore and so will aid the city from it's assembly instead.

    Demosthenes "Keltos" Age: 34.
Keltos was given his nickname both because he was the son of the cyclops, and because of his impressive physique. In actuality he is Themistocles' nephew, now formally adopted as his son and heir after all of The One-Eye's children were slain in battle. A big, strong man he favoured competing in games, particularly wrestling. Has been on campaign several times for the city where he earned a decent reputation as a strong fighter. He shares his father's devotion to the cause. Not quite so ruthless as the old man, he is nonetheless being groomed to succeed him as the man to watch over the well-being of the democracy. Has had several lovers, both male and female, in the past and is somewhat more sardonic than his father.

    Nicanor
    Age: 50
    Bio:
Nicanor is an elderly man who is a descended from a long line of merchants who had resided in Athens. He himself has continued his family tradition and until recently, Nicanor had been doing well in his trade. That had all changed when the first Peloponnesian War had broken out and slowly but steadily his business had declined as his clients attention focused to war and its related industries. Because of the fall of his merchant business, Nicanor has returned to his home city of Athens in an attempt to resurrect his former commercial glory. Due to the rise in the recent wars, Nicanor has begun to delve into the world of politics though his expertise is at an amateur level at best.

    Kassandros
    Age: 28
    Bio:
Kassandros is Nicanor’s eldest son and technically his heir. Unlike his father, Kassandros has so far refused to delve himself into the world of a merchant and has instead chosen a military path with political aspirations. Kassandros was once a former mercenary, fighting as the standard hoplite in engagements here and there across the Aegean. He has returned from his life as a mercenary in at his father’s behest to help his father restore his business, though his return was only begrudgingly so. Kassandros is an intelligent man but with a side of recklessness that can hinder his ability to fight well.

    Nikomedes:
    Age: 20
    Bio:
Nikomedes is the second son of Nicanor and is seen by his father as the good son for he has decided to follow his father’s footsteps and become a merchant. He is a bright man who happens to very cautious and is the antithesis to his reckless brother. Nikomedes has spent his whole life by his father’s side as a merchant and as such he has very little skill or abilities as a soldier or politician, although there appears to be room for either in Nikomedes future.

    Eumenes of Acharnae

    Age:22

A more distant relative of Thermistocles the "One-Eye", Eumenes was born and raised in Acharnae, a major demos of Athens and Attica.
His father Isocrates, Thermistocles' cousin, was once the demarchos of Acharnae, where that side of the family kept estates and land for some time.
Now, Isocrates has been dead for almost a year, and his son, Eumenes, known for his acumen rather than any inane physical ability, comes to Athens.

    Kleomenes
    Age: 30

Son of a sculptor, and hoplite of the First Peloponnesian War, Kleomenes grew up in the one of the many neighbourhoods of the demos. However due to his sociable mind he associated with friends of more aristocratic roots. It is because of his these connections he has devoted a life to politics, however still indulges himself with simpler things in life. Kleomenes can be a idealistic, and emotional character, preferring to do things on the spur of the moment.

    Name: Thaptotimos (Θαπτωτιμους)
    Age: 21

Bio: The son of a Theban noble, the soil of misfortune. History cannot tell his true origins, and can only say so much as he can about his own life. But his aspirations are clear, and seeped in revenge. As a young, blond, ephebe, he donned the family garb - a dark blue tunic - the rusted sword of his disappeared father and the golden fig laurel of her hanged mother, that he might be recognized in his return to Thebes. For now, he sets off for the service of a king - a king whose generosity might lead him to restore the honor so deeply burred in the dark soil of the Theban hills.

    Name: Kleitos
    Age: 36

Kleitos' family has come far since his great great grandfather had first arrived here, and the Metic tag was one no longer associated with his name. His father, before his death, was known as one of Athens best traders and Kleitos knew that with mild frugality he has enough coin to last his lifetime. Kleitos wants more though, he wants a legacy of his name, his actions, to be remembered at least within his family tree and hopefully throughout the Hellenes, however without his fathers brain for maths he must strike into new areas, and he sets his sights on politics.

    House Taras

A large and wealthy family originating from a renown Spartan Mercenary who first worked in Magna Graecia from his shack in Taras, then went to Cyrenaica where he became famed and married a beautiful daughter of a local aristocrat and later inherited the estate and wealth of the old man. There he adopted the family name Taras as most people knew him as the Mercenary Captain from Taras to begin with. Later generations became more and more traders and merchants, while retaining the golden scorpion on red as family symbol after the original Mercenary Company basically became the Household Guards and bodyguards for the family. This is also the reason why the armed escort for House Taras traders are often far higher trained than one would expect.
In the last two generations the family established well itself in the city of their name. Taras became the center of their little trade empire, and now the current Head of the House decided to expand into Athens as well, the ancestral enemy of Sparta.

Details on the members of the family coming up soon (I hope), will post once all is done, I tend to write often too long and decided to add it later so I won't take up even more hours to refine stuff

    Argalos Taras

He is 47 years old, the current head of House Taras, and grandson to an Athenian aristocrat. He is nicknamed the "Old Scorpion", and was the one who increased the importance and prestige of warrior training in the family after many generations of neglect. A decade younger he was an expert at fighting bears as attraction, something most people can't claim to even walk away from alive. As he became weaker he began to coat his blade in the poison his House is famed for using to compensate for the loss of reflexes and might. After him it became something like a tradition to name other members of the family also as somekind of Scorpion. He has green eyes and golden blonde hair, like most of the members of House Taras. He is usually very patient and while not having a formal education of accounting shows great sense for finding good deals and opening trade routes.

    Anaxagoras Taras

Oldest son and heir to the House at the age of 32. Like his father he is also a warrior, although not as great as his father Argalos still great with the spear. Unlike his father he is not good at all as a merchant, and prefers to drink and play with whores. Despite this, he still has no children. He is tall and looks handsome except that he lost an eye during his childhood at spear training. He wears a small patch of red cloth to cover his missing eye as if it was something shameful. The other eye still is the green the family is known for, and like his father also has golden blonde hair. His nickname is the "One-Eyed Scorpion", although he is also known as the "Whoring Scorpion". He is arrogant and proud, and awaits the day when he rules the House eagerly.

    Lykos Taras

The 25 year old second son of Argalos, who is clever, but neither beautiful nor tall. Actually, he is a dwarf. He also has blonde hair although less bright than that of his father and brother, and the green eyes of the family. If he were born in Sparta he would already be dead before his first year. This is what his beloved father often said to him. Despite the constant mockery of his father Lykos is actually the most talented at handling wealth, and often helps out Argalos, and is expected to become the right hand to Anaxagoras when he becomes leader to the House and Merchant Guild of Taras. He has no combat training at all, despite wishing for one it was declined by both his parents as a child. Instead Lykos became quickly literate in many languages, and became fascinated by the Egyptian culture. He is a misunderstood scholar. He is nicknamed "Little Wolf" by his family due to his name "Lykos" meaning wolf, and because not calling him a scorpion is to insult him further. Only his sister and younger brother call him "Little Scorpion".

    Skorpiodoros Taras

Skorpiodoros is the youngest child and also youngest son of the main branch of House Taras. He is 16 years old. He shows great promise as a sword fighter, but is more interested in books just like his brother Lykos who adores him. He inherited the black hair of his mother, but has the green eyes of the main branch. His mother died in childbirth and the Old Scorpion didn't remarry ever since. He is already taller than his brother Lykos, but still smaller than his other siblings. His hobby is sailing and a trader once remarked he would make a good sailor. His nicknames are either the "Young Scorpion", or the "Black Scorpion".

    Skorpia Taras

Skorpia is the only daughter of the Old Scorpion. She is 19 years old, a true beauty with golden locks, and brown eyes inherited from her mother. She is quite a tomboy, and his father doesn't mind it, neither the other members of the family, except Anaxagoras who says she should act more as expected of a woman. Since the times of House Taras as a Mercenary Company it was usual for talented women of the family to marry matrilineal and establish a new branch of House Taras. Skorpia is a fierce Archer and knows the worth of the finest spices and clothes, dye, or fruits the best in the family. She is also expected to start a new branch of the dynasty, with whomever she believes is worth doing it, and whomever that brave or foolish man may be. She cares much for his younger brother Skorpiodoros, but has less respect for his other brothers. Despite treating Lykos fairer than Anaxagoras, and even calling him a proper nickname, due to being a dwarf and "lacking backbone" she still sometimes mistreats him. Skorpia doesn't care about getting a nickname for herself, and her name means scorpion to begin with anyway.

    Solon (28)

Solon grew up on his fathers horse farm on outskirts Athens where he learnt to ride as soon as he could walk and by his teens had joined the Athenian Hippeus, rising to command a small force of lance armed cavalry and now seeks military rank and prestige as a commander in his own right. Strong and bold, Solon is a determined military office driven by extreme loyalty towards Athens to the point of nationalism. Off the field he is fond of wine and brothels (perhaps a little too much for his conservative father).

    Phoebe (21)

The sister of Solon, Phoebe is a priestess of Demeter and Persephone. Fascinated by the Gods from a young age, Phoebe eschewed marriage preferring to take the initiation of the Eleusinian Mysteries before joining the cult of Demeter and Persephone as a priestess. As well as being a priestess, Phoebe is an avid socialite amongst Athenian nobility and uses her charm and grace to seek supplicants for the mysteries.

    Dracon (52)

The father of Solon and Phoebe, Dracon is a member of the Greek nobility of the Attica and a former archon of Athens who served as Thesmothétai (judicial officer). Like many former Archons he currently sits on the Areopagus, which serves as the High court and council of elders for the city of Athens. While he served briefly in the military in his youth before setting up as a horse breeder, Dracon's skills lie in the political arena, a veteran of a thousand debates, he is a stern and powerful orator with a deeply conservative nature.

    Demosthenes son of NiciasAge: 32

Demosthenes is a wealthy trader known both for his trading accumen and for his warmongering tendencies. He is from a very long and renowned line of mariners famour for their exploits in battle at sea. Some say the very sea runs in his and his son's veins. At an earlier age he captained a trireme for a number of years. His father had funded the building of the ship but Demosthenes showed himself to be a natural warleader. He has passed on this knowledge to his younger adopted son Theseus. He is nearly 6 feet tall and of a strong build, unusual for a Greek with dark hair.

    Theseus son of Demosthenes
    Age: 20

The adopted son of the famed Demosthenes. He is Of unknown heritage though his father now claims him for his own. He has been trained from thr age of 12 in the art of war by his father who hired tutors and instructors for him. He has become strong and well learned in the tactics of the time on both land and sea. He is his father's most loyal companion, almost never disappointing him. He has a lighter complexion than his father with dusty brown hair but a very strong build. He is exceedingly clever and loves to gamble and fight wherever he goes. His orating skills have actually become quite good.
