Default Is There a 'Units Guide' to Game of Thrones? List of all possible units?

I haven't read all the books yet, so I don't know what possible units there are. Does anybody know of a list of units or descriptions of armies for the franchise?

Basically, I need to know whats possible for each faction. Hopefully there is a list or guide somewhere?

Much appreciated for any help in this area.

You can just check Custom Battle when you load the game up.

Yes, I have and that is why I want to create more units, I don't think the current mods have enough variety.

Basicly from what I can tell the team have divided the factions into 4 groups/cultures. Northern (stark), ironborn (greyjoy), dornish (martell) and andal (the rest). Between these groups It will likely be many changes just look at the previews!

I think all andal factions have 3 levy units (outriders, spearman and archers) not sure about peasants. After that comes ā series of semi-professional units who seems to be the same fot most andal factions. Riverlands Spearmen, Westerlands Man at arms etc. The biggest variation is the fascinating "aor" area of reqruitment units that comes from specific settlements. Ex Mallister Seagard (tully), Hornhill vanguard (tyrell), guards of the crossing (frey). Im not sure about cavalry!

    Check out the previews!

Remember the pikemen, well-drilled, probably (semi) professional soldiers in the lannister army, the other andal forces maybe not as good for pikemen. Personally I think that the westeros forces were (broadly) knights, pike/spearmen, archers, then men-at-arms (weaker dismounted and mounted knights) and levies. The northerner a would be primarily men-at-arms and spearmen, same with the iron born. The Dornish would be spears and missile cav. The wiki is quite good for knight to foot ratios ( not the game of thrones wiki however)

I thinking to add more "named" units, rather than base militia/infantry. But like I mentioned I haven't read all the books yet, so I'm not very well versed on all the possible units you could find in the series. As an example, Third Age Realism+ mod fleshed out the base game with more 'named' units for most factions and I would like to do something similar with Westeros, but I don't know what's possible in the lore/cannon for each faction. An example from Third Age would be the addition of Belfallas Archers, Ithillien spearmen, Gondor's 'Knights of The White Tree' or whatever it was, that sort of thing.

On a related topic, are the Gold Cloaks the same as the Kings Guard? Or are those two separate squads?

Sorry about all these posts......Soz about the mess of the previous post.... Only really Jaime's chapters revealed the names of certain bands but also what they were. The holy hundred my primary example. We are told of different "bands" but barely any more than their names. Certain houses are known for tactics (house hunter in the vale for skirmishes and ambushes I believe...House Tarly for being in the vanguard). You could easily make up your own units as long as you can give them a description which remains true to asoiaf ( vanguards of horn hill for example)......The lannister a I believe got the most information relating to army units and tactics in the first books and very little is known of the Dornish, vale men, and even the ironborn and Starks........The river lands could be a good place to diversify the aor roster, with Freys, mallisters being the primary example.

Different. The gold cloaks were the defenders of King's Landing, primarily commoners. The kings guard are 7 (traditionally) of the greatest knights in Westeros, sworn to protect the king. They are seperate, however, the kings guard commanded "squads" of gold cloaks in trying to arrest Arya, Barristan, and during the events of ACoK (just to confuse you). Units: Lannister: Holy hundred- most disciplined cavalry force in westeros. Sarsefield mounted archers. Stark: Hornwood archers, better trained I guess. Manderly knights (there were no other knights in the north). Andals: Sparrows, warrior sons (script their appearance maybe) greyjoy: Drowned men (better morale than warriors maybe?). Andals: household guards (more flashy armoured spearmen). Stark: crannogmen ( skirmishers ) Stannis: servants of rhollar (normal unit skins but with fiery hearts on their chests?). Tyrell: Vanguards of hornhill. Ps. Some units r from books others I just imagined or presumed or stole from other mods.

Just remember that the current version we have access to is not anything like the finished mod will be. They probably will come up with better names than: Spearman (if not, maybe I should re-consider giving them rep )

Thanks, ur welcome, that's good.....n00b is right.......what makes the upcoming(?) release of the "actual" mod more exciting to me is not the improved map, or skins, or addition of portrait generator used to give family members the same appearance (see Freys of the crossing preview I believe) but is the fact that they are making most units aor, creating a more realistic gameplay for all involved. The units also help flesh out an area which GRRM only really touched on (actual types of fighters which I mentioned before) very little, at least in the first books and it can give u a sense of accomplishment when as Lannister u can recruit mallisters marines and umber greatswords.

GRRM Sadly doesn`t give too much detail on special units; Well, he didn`t create his world with a game or fan mod in mind, i guess.

If you want to mod in more units, the sky is your limit. Your best bet is to look for one of the bigger noble houses and to create some unique unit which could make sense for them.

When creating units we try to stick to something which has at least some grounding in the books. For the standard units that`s pretty simple- Levies, men-at-arms, knights.. In other cases it`s made simple since some general information is given- e.g the dornishmen are good spearmen and use horse archers, the northmen have few knights, the Ironborn no mounted soldiers etc.

There are just a few units, ready for us to use- Like the Sarsfield mounted archers, White harbour knights or the guards of the crossing. (Which aren`t named in the books, but an unusual high amount of soldiers with the same equipment are seen in one memorable chapter..)

In other cases we simply looked up tidbits of information and well-liked or important houses and added some unique unit to them. (While also taking strategic positions and the gameplay into account.)

In conclusion; As long as you don`t create something really out of place it fits.

Thanks guys for the advice, that all makes sense. A little bit of creativity and common sense could go a long ways.
