Default Has anyone not played the original Rome TW? But are buying Rome 2

Just wondered if any one who is a fairly new to the total war series that has not played the original Rome Total War that was released in 2004?

Also as a spin of question if you have played Rome TW what features would you like from the original game that are not in Rome 2 that you know of as of now?

I played the original and something I would have liked in Rome 2 was a UI more like Rome or Medieval 2's but with the ability to have multiple units.

Rome TW is the only one I didn't play.
Back then, my computer could only handle Shogun/Medieval TW. And when I bought a new one, Medieval 2 was already out, so I just skipped Rome.

Can't wait for Rome II, though

Features I would want back from Rome 1: City View, Family tree since we've seen no family tree. Other than that Rome 2 looks very good. It's clear that CA took notice of Rome 1's mods when making Rome 2.

Rome 1's simplicity is the feature I will miss.

Its simple where you dont see eyes above your soldiers, it doesnt have that colour green that appears everytime you encourage your soldiers, the unit cards were not covered by unit status(running, fighting, etc...)

Lastly, its huge scale is larger than rome 2, cavalry were 108 in rome 1 but in rome 2, its 80 men only... Also missile, 160 in rome 1 compared to 120 as jack stated... I hope im wrong.....

Anyways, there are also things that rome 2 has compared to rome 1... But im gonna miss the simple gameplay of rome 1...

My first TW was Shogun II. This makes Rome II my second TW game

I joined at MTW2, so was unfortunate enough to miss out on RTW1.

I tried going back to play it but the graphics were so lame I reluctantly never played a campaign. Alas though, the sequel is going to destroy all Total War games.

Not sure if this is Darthmod Rome campaign map or Vanilla, but the amount of regions in this map if it's Vanilla is amazing:

It's definately not vanilla. Vanilla had much less regions. Rome 1 needed massive modding, Rome 2 will not, although i will probably do some unit stat adjustments at some point like i used in shogun 2.

I definitly miss the "circle of revolts" in big empires.

normal city -> population grows -> population makes together with the garnision the city dirty -> population is pissed -> the player removes the garnision (or some units of them) to make the city a little bit cleaner -> population grows still -> the population is again pissed because of the dirt -> revolt -> army comes back and "reduces" the population -> normal city -> population grows -> ...

    ...not

I can't clearly say, which feature i will miss because i wasn't able to play rome 2 but if it isn't in i will miss the family tree i think.

Music and voice-acting. But that's purely for nostalgic reasons that don't necessarily relate to the game. As for everything else...it's hard to say I miss something when I haven't played the thing I'm supposed to be comparing it to.

I played Rome 1. Not much I will miss from it. Rome 2 over Rome 1 for me.

Yep pretty much. And OP elephant killing phalanxes. Those pigs pissed me off so much. The poor Greeks got flaming pigs instead of a decent cavalry unit. Carthingians get elephants for final upgrade, Greeks get pigs. Oh yay! And don't forget double hit point berserkers and German phalanxes

Edit: oh yeah, and sniper onagers that take out ment generals before the battle even starts. Heavy artillery in field battles was really annoying.

Vanilla Rome was a disaster. I can't findy any other word to describe my thoughts exactly

Rome 1 means Europa Barbarorum to me...

Repped. This is exactly what I used to do, and what most people do now. Rome 1 vanilla was not that great. Good? Yes, but its replayability was average at best (remember vanilla means no unlocking factions, regardless of how easy it was). Rome 2 will be as good as its moddability, whether you want to debate if that is dictated by the limitation of the engine, the complexion of it, or the limitations of the modders is up to you, I will not go through that for the 20th time.

Back to OP, RTW was my first TW game. I think I started playing it in 2008 (MTW was already out, as was Kingdoms), but I bought Rome because I saw the mods (EB, RSII, RTR, SPQR). This game will be nothing much more than a S2TW with a full Rome conversion mod, be it good or bad.
When Hiero returned to besiege their base (Messana) in 265 BC the Mamertines called for help from a nearby fleet from Carthage, which occupied the harbor of Messana. Seeing this, the Syracuse forces retired, not wishing to confront Carthaginian forces. Uncomfortable under the Cathaginian "protection," the Mamertines now appealed to Rome to be allowed into the protection of the Roman people. At first, the Romans did not wish to come to the aid of soldiers who had unjustly stolen a city from its rightful possessors. However, unwilling to see Carthaginian power spread further over Sicily and get too close to Italy, Rome responded by entering into an alliance with the Mamertines. In response, Syracuse allied itself with Carthage, imploring their protection. With Rome and Carthage brought into conflict, the Syracuse/Mamertine conflict escalated into the First Punic War.

I want, right now, from Rome 1, a Rome 2 demo version of the Battle of the River Trebia.

I still remember downloading that demo, wondering wtf is Rome Total War? Then playing it hundreds of times over and over and over.

I am actually playing Rome 1 this week in anticipation of Rome 2. It would have been interesting to have the possibility to exchange regions just like in Rome 1...
