The French Declared war on the Dutch (Me). After the dutch mobilized the army it marched down to a strategic position just south of Rotterdam. The French began offensive operations by marching north through Antwerp to Bergen-op-zoom. From there they marched on to the town of Roosendaal. The only obstacle between the French and the Dutch armies were the numerous canals that run through much of southern provinces of the Netherlands. The Dutch crossed the River Waal and set up defensive positions in the little town of Standdaarbuiten, positioning the artillery brigade along a slight ridge with pre-sighted kill-zones on the two crossings of the canal on both sides of the town. The three Brigades of Dutch infantry Dug Trench networks near the crossings. This picture is the end result of the failed attempt by the French army to cross the stone bridge on the Dutch right flank. 2000 French were killed in 5 minutes trying to push the Dutch out of their entrenchments, and secure the Bridgehead to continue operations on moving north to Rotterdam. After the smoke cleared the Dutch General made the call to tell the officers in the regiments to advance across the bridge in pursuit of the few Frenchmen lucky enough to survive. Though the order came to late and that allowed the French time to regroup and assemble some of the survivors of the failed attack. The Dutch approached the Bridge with care not to cross too early. Instead two regiments skirmished with the French remnants whilst a third crossed the bridge double quick. The gambit payed off. The French defense was distracted by the fire coming from the Dutch bank of the Canal, this allowed the Third Regiment to form on their flank and fire down their line. It didn't take much for the French defense to collapse and turn into a full retreat. In a futile attempt to delay or cause some damage to the Dutch ranks, every available French 75mm gun that wasn't disabled or destroyed was aimed at the bridge desperately trying to fire on the incoming Dutch that were now spewing over the bridge with rapid speed. No sooner did the first Dutch Infantry brigade cross the bridge than did the second. The Dutch Swarmed upon the French artillery positions like locusts, shouting, stabbing, and killing. The charge was so swift and violent that the French artillery didn't even have time to fire their guns at point blank range. Nor did those few batteries that tried to limber up and try to run have enough time before the madness of the melee consumed them into the dark cloud of war and death.
