All war depends upon it.

64k units?? That doesn't seem at all reasonable unless they've significantly overhauled the threading of Rome II.
Looks you probably CAN tweak the files to change the unit settings, sweet
nice, there is actually one new piece of info i didnt know yet. that s more than i ve expected from that preview
it s the ai s attitude towards friendly fire. cool stuff :3
Unit sizes can now be tweaked apparently, and it sounds like confirmation that things will be good and work, going on what the producer dude said.

Don't trust IGN, gave a 9.5 to Empire.

— CA trying to prevent dissent on their forums
They probably didn't spend a lot of time with it. On another note a lot of players enjoyed ETW. Myself included. Mostly because I was focusing on enjoying the game and not being as pessimistic as some here on TWC. There are a lot of people who still play it on MP as well.
That's BS. ETW lagged really bad. That was some years ago. The newer Warscape games have increasingly less lag. Also, unless you actually have spent a lot of hours playing the non-released TWR2 I wouldn't make such assumptions. Especially when your benchmark is based on an older game and you have no definitive proof.
"Rome II will attract new fans and impress loyalists…" ...will attract new fans because it has a tutorial and impress loyalists because they can pump up the difficulty… Brilliant arguments. I want to become a games journalist when i'm big, daddy.
Am I the only one who dislikes this article? Nothing wrong with the content... it's that way IGN has of making you think some suited up bussinessman with sunglasses dictated the article for them.
As owner of a mid tier PC I really hope they're being honest with that info. They are implying it's more optimized than shogun 2.
Under Patronage of MARCVS
They just say that old pcs CAN run it. It looks very similar to Shogun and CA has already stated that they are aiming for the minimum requirements to be the same as Shogun 2, so expect a similar performance.
As for the big battles, they key sentence is:
Yupp, that same skynet that controls terminators and nearly completelly wiped humanity. When we get such machines... well hopefully we won't care so much about graphics and unit sizes since at least we can hope the AI in TW will then be as clever as your average Schwarzenegger....owners of Skynet-like hardware...

It seems indeed so.
The meaning of this statement seems pretty obvious. But honestly, after the 9.5 they gave to UNPATCHED vanilla Empire, it's better not to count too much on that...Shogun II was a veritable Crysis in terms of how it sought to humble even the beastiest of computers, but Rome II is primed to run on a PC that’s almost as ancient as the game’s epoch.
If it'll be true then![]()
My brothers PC (which I use for Total War when I'm home from uni) is total wankpiece, I think it has an i3 and an integrated processor - anyway it can run Shogun 2 with unit sizes of 300 - 400 with at a decent speed at mostly low settings. I must admit it did surprise me how well it ran consider it cost about 300 quid.
Just goes to show how scale-able the series can be.
Whenever I read stuff at IGN? I get that used car salesman vibe. I'm sure Rome 2 will be at least a little better than Shogun 2 but Al's Rome vs Macedon video made it pretty clear they won't be getting much more out of the tactical AI. Just as the prologue hints that the corridors of Shogun 2 are here to stay. Hopefully the naval battles will be as entertaining as they were in Empire and Fall.
The bit about "tweaking the preference files to double the unit size" is clearly the high point of the article. More or less confirming that modding unit sizes shouldn't be a problem. That eases my displeasure over the unit size thing a bit.
Me as well. But I am still worried about the whole units fitting onto transport ships question. From what they've said you can fit 80 men on a ship, so 2 ships for a 160 man unit. If we double the unit size, will there just be 4 ships for a unit? Or will it screw the game up? We really need to get someone from CA to explain this.
When I edited Shogun 2's preference file and went straight for the multiplier, I saw one for the navy too. Now, I'm not sure if the transports are covered in the navy multiplier or for the campaign unit multiplier. Someone from CA really should explain this. Since the transports are primarily there for the land units, I'm guessing they will depend on the multiplier for units in general and not for the naval multiplier.
I personally invite you to check out my complete combat overhaul which will give you a completely new Rome 2 experience:
