    Default The Assessment of Constantinople

Roger de Rochechouart, with permission from the new Emperor Bohemond, began to scout the city. He was trying to assess the damage, both physical and financial, done by the Crusaders, along with estimating the number of new homeless and orphaned in the city itself.

He started with the Venetian attack at the Theodosian Walls. They had crossed from Galata and began their battle. Roger and nearly everyone in the city remembered the smoke that filled the air from the Venetians.

His second stop would be Lycus. It was the main focus of the attack as Bohemond had commanded the attack himself. Roger was unsure as to what happened during the attack or even casualty rates from it. He just knew that he needed to include it.

His last stop would be the Blachernae. He commanded the attack on it and tried his hardest to limit looting and raiding. He had even taken in an abandoned apartment as his new home in the city. Scouting it and seeing any damage first hand would either be a relief or a surprise.

As these 3 points made up the entire city, their levels of stability, damage, and other factors would impact the city as a whole for years to come. Roger left the Grand Palace, and embarked on his task.

Celsius, just so you're aware, the Franks were bad at managing this city.
Even after 30 years of rule, they couldn't fix this city, nor manage any of Greece.
Are you still wanting to try this? It will be hard/expensive.

Yeah, I still want to go forward. I just want to get the info and numbers so I can get a feel on what is happening/going to happen.

ooc: I was going to have my police patrol call in at every major home thread and take a brief sensus of each lord, troops and general report of the security/status quo. That cool with you? Maybe you want me to RP the police delivering the report to you?

As of now, Roger is basically walking the street with a squire so it doesn't seem like a police action. Just a simple walk, talk, and observe.

Father Johannes was out in the streets near the southern harbors, together with a large group of Greeks. They were helping out some of the people in the area repairing their homes after the horrendous pillaging of the Venetians. Johannes hadn't been able to stand the destruction when he first walked these streets, so he had gathered volunteers from all over the city to help with whatever they were able to. Repairing homes, handing out supplies of food, helping people wuo had lost everything in the battle... they did what they could, but Johannes knew it wasn't enough. Supplies were low and without proper support, most of what they accomplished was in vain. He sighed while he handed out bread to the workers.

Roger remembered that the Theodosian Walls weren't captured by the Venetians, but by D'Alençon and his men. The walls themselves weren't damaged, because the attackers had used ladders. The merchant district close to it had been looted, however. It would take a lot of time and money to get the district up and running again, although it was quite vital to generating income. 30,000 should be enough to restore the warehouses and shops to working order.
His second stop would be Lycus. It was the main focus of the attack as Bohemond had commanded the attack himself. Roger was unsure as to what happened during the attack or even casualty rates from it. He just knew that he needed to include it.
The Fifth Military Gate had totally collapsed, and the walls near to it heavily damaged. The River Lycus wall had been heavily damaged as well, but still stood. Roger estimated the damage to the walls to cost some 150,000 gold to repair, and a lot of time. The part of the city that lay behind those walls had been pillaged as well, but no significant damage was seen.

His last stop would be the Blachernae. He commanded the attack on it and tried his hardest to limit looting and raiding. He had even taken in an abandoned apartment as his new home in the city. Scouting it and seeing any damage first hand would either be a relief or a surprise.
The gate had collapsed, and the fortress of Anemas was quite heavily damaged. It would take about 70,000 gold to repair the defenses here. The district looked good, with only minimal damage to the houses and villas here.
As these 3 points made up the entire city, their levels of stability, damage, and other factors would impact the city as a whole for years to come. Roger left the Grand Palace, and embarked on his task.
He hadn't yet visited the worst part of the city, the south side where the Venetians had landed...

Roger was at awe. So quickly had his numbers of repair gone up. Hundreds of thousands, and more to come when he would visit the site of the Venetian attack. It would take years, perhaps even decades to bring to the city back from this.

He and his squire made their way to the edge of the city near the ports to get a full view of the Venetian damage.

The Venetians had seemingly done all they could to keep the fire ablaze: Not a single building was left standing, except the odd stone structure here and there. The port where the Venetians had landed was utterly devastated as well, likely destroyed on purpose when the Doge left the city. The damage would cost about half a million to clear and restore, because the whole district was left in ruins.

Estimated 150,000 citizens before the sack

    Max% killed in battle = 30
    rolled: 24
    150,000*0.24=36,000 killed
    114,000 remain
    Galata: 30,440
    Lycus: 30,440
    Blachernae: 40,580
    Harbors: 12,540

    Homeless percentages
    Galata: 21%
    Lycus: 13%
    Blachernae: 3%
    Harbors: 95%

    Total number of homeless:
    6390+3960+1220+11910=23,480 homeless
