Hi there!
First and foremost, let me clarify my intentions with this thread: I want to highlight my views on the strategies, tips and ideas related to a given faction (in this case, the Darknut Legion) when it comes to battling IN CAMPAIGN MODE. I don't want to hunt bugs or complain about given balance issues, this is not the place. Instead, I assume that everything is working as designed. Without further ado, let's get into it.
The Army Rundown:
Darknut Armies can be roughly divided into three tiers, from my own experience:
- Initiates: They're the backbone of your army in a campaign. You'll produce lots of them, and you'll want to produce lots of them, because they're the most balanced of your (mostly über-heavy) armies. I usually tend to put them in the middle of my deployment, becoming the "anvil" against which I try to crush my foes. A good pack of Initiates can march against almost all standard units of the game without shame.
- Fokka Knights: You'll get to love these buggers. They're the only quick unit in the Darknut Roster, and they usually play the role of flankers or surprise attackers. If you can draw the attention away from them, two or three Fokka units can be used rather nicely for surgical strikes against pointed targets (for example, artillery)
- All the rest: From Adepts on, all the remaining Darknut units share a common trait. They're Panzers on two legs, slow but dauntless, capable of soaking a heavy amount of damage and still carrying on. Usually, I put them on the flanks and use them as "hammer", sending them into the thick of battle.
Auxiliaries:
I do believe that the Darknuts were fashioned like the Roman Legions, and as such, they require the aid of auxiliary troops. Their lack of ranged attacks and their slow speed are edges that other factions can use against the Legion. That can be remedied by making good use of mercenary units, such as Zuna Crossbowmen, Gerudo Pirates or Rogue Hylian Soldiers. Keaton Highwaymen can be used with a rather nice effect to hunt behind enemy lines.
Keep an eye out for...
Artillery. That will be your nightmare unless you tackle it from the very beginning of the battle, sonny. Hylian Trebuchets can deal a heavy amount of damage to your slowly advancing troops unless you send some quick units to sabotage the enemy ranged weapons.
Rules of Thumb
- Base your field armies around Initiates.
- Fokka Knights are your friends, use them against that nasty artillery.
- Boost your numbers with mercs.
- Heavier units must be used as a hammer to deal the killing blow, otherwise they're too slow to traverse the map.
- Darknuts don't like charging, so having a good positioning is key for success.
- Slow and steady beats quick and twitchy.
Hope these little ramblings are helpful to you guys!
