So I'm doing my first ever BYZ campaign and I'm wondering if they have access to the gunpowder units. Now I know they don't in custom battles if I remember correctly but is this true for campaign?

We Came, We Saw, We Ran Away!
I believe it is, unless something has changed.
If you rep me, leave your name. I'll look more kindly on your future transgressions.
That's unfortunate. It's hard to have the 'bringing Rome back' feeling when they're technologically inferior throughout.
We Came, We Saw, We Ran Away!
They do have access to a Gunpowder unit, but if I recall correctly, it was a mercenary unit, not a standard one.
I don't understand why they don't have them.
Probably because they didnt really have them in numbers when other nations were getting them.
But, they arent technologicly inferior throughout... just after others start getting gunpowder units around 1300ish and professional plate armies.
The first 70 years or so they are tough (and thats if you play the late campaign. If you start at 1100, they are awesome for a long time).
The trick is to build them a large empire before everyone else starts to surpase them in technology so you can overwhelm them with numbers.
Honest and truly, I AM Robin Hood!
yeah and the flame-thrower is awesome 2 units can destroy an army almost
They have at least one gunpowder unit available which was some unit of italians(non mercenary) living in byzantine lands I believe, they were not available to other nations I think. If you set the era to late or all in the custom battle, you can see all of the unlockable units they have(setting the era to all will also show completely all mercs available in game).
Don't know about the others, but for me when Gunpowder event appears, gunpowder units still don't appear. Is there something wrong?
Nah - although the gunpowder discover event happens, it takes a while (long while) before you can recruit even bombards.
well depends the faction that you play Italian factions get hand gunners very early the Byzantines must wait until 1500+ to take gunpowder units, the cannons you can start recruit from 1350 for all the factions i think.
This might be in an older version, but the latin gunpowder unit might be tied to having a merchant's guild in the city.

http://www.stainless-steel-mod.com/ is the answer to all your questions.
If you are referring to the flame thrower units, greek fire throwers yes they are in stainless steel 6.4. thats what i play. you have to wait quite a while. but after the fourth lanteran council on turn 110ish all the badass units are available. like the spartii spearmen and the varangian guard... im spelling this stuff wrong but you can for sure get them. BUT only in Constantinople.
get money and bribe enemy troops to join ur faction
The flame dudes are pretty bad ass I just have no tactic to use them. I ment actual gunpowder units though but its ok. If you have a tactical suggestion for the flame thrower dudes I'm all ears! I mean do I just let the enemy charge into the fire lol?
I haven't used any Varangian guard yet at all. I'm in about Turn 80 I think in late campaign. My Chrythroiaski? (swordsmen infantyry) get far too many casualties in the meat and grind of a battle. Although I win most engagements with them 1-1 I feel I get too many casualties against even spearmen.
We Came, We Saw, We Ran Away!
i use the byzantium archers that have the stakes, or bulgarian bragands i think is their name. throw up the stakes before a battle. harrass the enemy into charging with archer Calvary and switch around the archers and flame throwers with spearmen protecting the sides. its usually pretty awesome what happens![]()
I use Flamethrowers only for 1 battle because they get killed before they can escape. Maybe you can use them as a bait.
