Sometimes yes, but usually no i dont. Matters on the situation. I only use it when i dont want my men to chase enemies, but other than that i never use it
I use it when i'm extremely outnumbered by the enemy. That way my men don't chase after the routing units and get overwhelmed by the other enemy units.
Useful for archers defending walls. They tend to move on the wall when the target you ordered them to attack, moves out of reach. They risk taking friendly fire. Also turn of skirmish mode, btw.

Yeah I use it a lot when on the defensive with heavy troops, phalanx's etc when I want to keep formation. There is nothing worse than setting up an excellent DIY defensive formation and having it break up and turn to mush!
Guard Mode = OFF (Attacking)
Guard Mode = ON (Defending)

Not always true i had a guard on a unit of hastati against gaul and it chased them after the routed.Originally Posted by Yakov
Well when I use guard mode, my roman infantry stays in the square formation and only the front line attacks. Besides from not chasing routed enemy, your infantry will only attack defensively. I turned it on and off and noticed that they attack less often when they're in guard mode. Its good for holding the line with cavalry flanking the enemy.
