    Default Praetorians

Are the Praetorian gaurd in PE?
I don't play with the Romans that much and when I do I never seem to get to the Marian reforms before I quit.
I took a look through the unit file and I did not see them.
If they are not in the game, is that intentional?

Nope. Only legionaries and 1st cohorts

Thats because Praetorians had special duties and were established after by an emperor, forgot which one. Well by the time that comes it'll be 20 BC or something very very late.

Augustus my friend Under him the praetorians were LOYAL AND GOOD. AFTER him they turned into backstabbing get-rich-quick scemes. Sources from Wiki.

Ahhh yea, although they did like some emperors If the praetorians kept to their job and Rome din't fall, I wonder how much farther along we would be without the hundreds of dark and feudal years...

Not too longer. The Western Empire IIRC was being attacked by all fronts, having a decline in treasury, having a decline in birth*, and having a decline in population*.

*This is because they made pipes to carry water out of lead which poisoned and killed many people.

Actually, the Praetorians were in effect long before the first Emperor.
They were certainly during the events after Caesar's death. Anthony and Octavian had them during Mutina.
Lepidus sent his own Praetorians to ostensibly watch events at Mutina, but they ended up joining Anthony if memory serves me correctly.
After Philipii, there were something like five or six praetorian cohorts formed from some of Caesar's veterans and split amongst Anthony and Octavian.
So they were in existence long before Augustus.
I believe they were formed pre-marius too. As headquarter troops and general's bodygaurd.
I would definetly like to see them in the game.
Urban cohorts too. Though how on earth they were stronger than the Praetorians in RTW escapes me.

Urban Cohorts just policed Rome. Also the Praetorians of the republic IIRC protected the legatus(?) tent during campaigns/battles.

I think the Urban cohorts fought in the year of the four Emperors.
    Cremona I think.
    I could be wrong.
Perhaps both could be something that is recruited only in Rome?

Perhaps someone could make it like SPQR where when you try to invade Rome urban cohorts pop up to protect the cities.

The proper Praetorians that most think about only came about when Augustus founded them. The Roman army as a whole, and the Praetorians in turn, simply LOVED Augustus Caesar.

It is the the only time the Praetorians were unquestionably loyal to the Emperor.

After Augustus' death, the Praetorians did have a few redeeming qualities... they disposed of Emperors that were truly detrimental to the Empire.

But very soon, they became opportunistic, backstabbing "guards." The travesty of putting up the Imperial Purple for auction comes readily to mind. The winning buyer becomes Emperor, only to be killed by the Praetorian scum later.

It wasn't until Constantine the Great won in a Civil War that he utterly destroyed the untrustworthy Praetorian Guards (who sided with the opposing leader).

The Eastern Roman Empire, who eventaully gets labelled the Byzantine Empire, get their own guard, the Varangian Guards, for the Emperor. They've usually been more loyal and have far better and more frequent shining moments of loyalty to the Empire than the scum Praetorians.

Gamewise in mods that have Praetorians, I'd rather have more, ever reliable Legionary Cohorts than the overpriced hamster pretty-boys that the Praetorians are.

Problem with that is that unless the Roman faction is controlled by a player, there's no way to disband those Urban Cohorts once they're done. And no, you cannot give them no movement points.

Regarding the Praetorians, from my understanding they were not an official part of the army until Augustus. As already stated, some pre-Imperial generals did have a "praetorian"-type group of soldiers, but they were little more than just bodyguards or reserves made up of experienced troops. As such, they can be represented in the game by simply using an ordinary Legionary Cohort that has more experience than other units.
