    Default Rooftops, Inside Buildings

    Hey guys, Sun here.
After re-watching both the intro for the game and the Hannibal video.
I was wondering if anyone knew if we could put units inside buildings?
Like on top of the building, inside the building and such.
It was cool in Empire, and I did use it especially in napoleon. I did miss it in Shogun
But was wondering if it will be in Rome 2?
Only practical application I can think of is obviously hiding bows and long range units
    in the buildings.

The title fooled me into thinking about burning pigs beneath walls.

    Well obviously ranged units have the ability to take shelter on rooftops. Inside buildings? Not sure. It would be awesome though. Just imagine hundreds of Roman soldiers marching through a building, a building filled with Spartans then, without them knowing, you come out and surprise attack them crap..now I want it ;-;

so its confirmed that we can have men on rooftops then? And yea I thought I saw some pics with the men inside the buildings too. But now what your proposing is hiding men inside building for ambushes well sir you should be working for the game!

If a bulding can be filled with units, then those buildings should be destructible, like walls, so if it is filled with spartans, you would give them onager or ballista shots))

I have seen only wall towers, and those buildings which destroyed by the collapsing wall towers.

This should add some extra fun to siege. Lost the walls? Time for some urban combat.

Hey Sun this is a great question and I hope this photo is any clue as to if we can have units on rooftops now. It'd be a great new feature IMO

hahah they havnt really came out and said it but almost all cinematic trailers and pics show archers on the roofs, but im thinking that we might have the ability to put soldiers in the building too. Because the archers have to go inside the buildings to get to the roofs. Someone also stated that if we can hide them inside the building, then we could perform ambushes of units just strolling through the streets.

I just hope we can. It'd be one of the things that would justify some features they've removed and put in needlessly

I can only imagine how awesome it'd be to have my roman peltasts take up position atop a italian villa's rooftop inside a small courtyard as my principes and triarii hold the enemy in the courtyard as peltasts picked enemies off rushing inside the main gate. EPIC movie quality stuff

It would also add alot of depth on how to attack forces holding a courtyard. And you would also bring your archers in building on your side to shoot into the courtyard as well lmao. I can imagine it like black hawk down lmao
Man Roman Peltasts? More Like CRETAN ARCHERS!!!!!

Yes, they definitely mentioned having garrison-able buildings, specifically buildings within city walls.
Really looking forward to this feature.

I would say there is good reason to believe there are garrison-able buildings. Let me make the case

-Firstly it has never truly been removed since Empire: In Empire/Napoleon you could garrison farm buildings, fortifications and drystone walls, and in Shogun 2 you could garrison gatehouses and parapets. Thus we have no reason not to believe garrisoning would not be possible

-Secondly this was an age of city sieges and fort conflict. Fighting from walltops and in buildings, and designing fortresses was so common it would not make sense for all fights to be out in the open

-Thirdly, and I think most decisively, screenshots from the battle of Carthage showed troops fighting from houses as well as the normal wall and street battles, and they stated (though early enough in the development that I grant it could have been removed) that it would be in:

    (bottom left of second pic)

See that the troops in the second picture are inside, not on top of, the tower

from the pic we both used, I wonder if once an archer is near the edge of the building, if a soldier will automatically just push him off instead of stabbing him

It would be excellent if that were so, and I wouldn't be surprised either. After all, soldiers being pushed off walls was in the original Rome
A step up would be a special edge-of-a-steep-drop animation where two men grapple before one of them slips or is pushed over the edge. That would be really immersive, impressive and dramatic - cinematic even

Wow I never realized that !! this actually goes back to my suggestion of actually including visible soldiers in guard towers in sieges and fort battles.

The men didn't have to necessarily be part of a unit but just maybe part of the guard tower system (in shogun 2 it was represented as magical arrows shooting from the towers themselves)

They could make it so the men could still be technically killed in the tower by either arrow fire or breaching it. Also to recycle it (theoretically if one doesnt set the tower/gate on fire) they could easily set up a system where you can click on said tower and the computer

would automatically send a small % of the unit you have selected to the tower to guard it no longer being apart of the unit. Only thing is they couldn't rejoin their original unit anymore because i could see how that would cause some bad pathing problems.

The group would simply no longer be part of that unit and would be forced to stay and defend that tower til they were killed or the battle finishes. What do you guys think? I think it would further CA's goal to add a human "element" to their games instead of magical towers that shoot arrows.

Could also make for some epic graphics where archers lean over and shoot enemies climbing up with towers and such

    Something like this:
