Such formation makes sense in Empire but does it in Rome 2 either? Any ideas?

Perhaps not as a hard square as such, but the ambush at Lake Trasimene did involve something that would be quite similar to this shot, only with Triarii.

The land is only green in England, didn't you know?

And the mediterranean vegetation is always yellow, because the tourist only come on summer and then go back to their countries to make videogames.

I think I see cypress, olive-trees, and other undeterminded trees.

In this case Prom is partly right, because the desert look is historically wrong and more a clischee image. Today we can not image how the mediterranean area looked like 2300 years ago. Large parts were covered with woods and north africa was everything but not a half desert like today. It was actually pretty green. The Libanon was famous for his wood and had huge forests, today they are allmost gone, but even in Roman times they were smaller than in Persian times.
If you ask a clima historian about reasons for the crisis of the late roman empire they will answer you that human made clima change is one of the largest reasons. This is something that started with the Libanon and the large wood export pretty early, but was the most destructive in roman times were the exhaustion of ressources was at the high because of the centralization within the empire. The most wood in Italy disappeared in this time and because they were never replaced soil erosion was the consequence. That is the main reason why many places around the mediterranean sea look like wastelands today.

I posted some links that show actual mediterranean landscapes some of them natural parks so they keep the look the Mediteranean had then. Anyway in spring most of the landscape is green. But in this games it is always yellow. It is as if north europe was always depicted snowed. And the tourists coming in summer ... is partialy a joke partialy true.

Note that Andalucía and Extremadura are the South of Spain.

This is Huelva province at the South of Spain.

They seem olive trees to me (maybe with a mixture of the LotR talking trees).
I think the landscape looks quite okay, only if we are on summer.
Disclaimer: the post above is way way prealpha, the final version will be way better than this.

I'm pretty sure, regardless of whether that Hastati formation is staged, the square formation is in the game. Remember the Teutoburg trailer?

Oh Gawwwd Prom. Always something to hate.
You live in Rome, so you WOULD know better, but I think it's pretty accurate, as Rome to me looks somewhat "like a desertic area with trees" anyway!

I think people uses desert Word to easyly so then it has no meaning. Even to deny the evidence. I have never seen an olive in a desert. The second picture is an olive in a actual explotation so in nature it would be surrounded by bushes and vegetation. Denying the existance of the seasons and the mediterranean forest, so it ends being some olives in a desert is ignoring the reallity and puts the one saying it in a strange position. Lets make Scandinavia and north Germany always snowed. Ridiculous no? well that is what happens with this visión of the Mediterranean-

This is the south of Europe.

Quite a good Green forest. Maybe due to British rain?

This screenshot is new. Everything else has already been said at some point.

    The funniest part:

Do you ever reach a situation where game balance and fun conflicts with historical accuracy? Which do you prioritise?

I think history tends to provide that balance anyway, so there’s not often that many clashes. But fun always wins out.
