well we've kinda seen the chariots in the battle of the Nile gameplay. I think most people would like to have a closer look at the phalanx and see whether its been improved or not.
i mean i hate it when they would swap their spears for a sword and then fight with that instead .
we want to see animations of barbarians and peasants impaling themselves on a wall full of pointy things !!!
If you work to earn a living, why then do you work yourself to death?
Phalanxes.
Its crazy that we havent seem them yet.
Phalanx... the game raise or fall with formation fighting... i mean when they are not able to put a phalanx in the game, than the game sucks... i can life when there are no roman formations... but phalanx or hoplite formations are a must have.

agreed. the way CA will design the phalanx will either make or brake gameplay with those particular units. If course, there's always mods :3
Also OP, one of those pictures are Osprey, and you might wanna take it down before the thread gets taken down.

I want scythed chariots but I doubt, if they show them before game release...
Hoplite and phalangite phalanx in action. It is very worrying that we haven't seen it yet.Logic suggests that if CA was confident and proud of the way they have made this formation they would be advertising it like crazy. But we still haven't seen it properly for the phalangites and not at all for the hoplites. If this formation sucks in the game you have immediately destroyed all the Hellenic and Hellenistic factions of the game and since we're talking about the Hellenistic era, they are many.
Let's hope it doesn't suck, but if it does, let's hope that it will at least be moddable.
I too understand your worries. The Pike phalanx is a big thing but I don't care about that one, personally. It's the Hoplite Phalanx which is super-important. To be honest, I cannot see this formation being all that possible being implemented while trying to stay true to the way it really worked. With the Romans, it is pretty easy. All they have to do is just give the Roman soldier non-moving animations for when they are in formation and defending and killing. Attacking animations are another thing altogether.
However, for the Phalanx, that would require specially-made animations which have to perfectly make sure that the shields are locked together while there are still 1 vs 1 animations happening at the same time. It is very hard to implement.
This is a big task that's weighing on CA's shoulders and testing the Hoplite Phalanx is one of the first things I'm going to do when I get Rome 2. I hope CA have nailed it.
Why do I get the feeling that we are going to see a 300 style Phalanx? When I say this, I mean like, they keep their formations and everything, but it all just turns into 1 vs 1 animations etc.
I'm not saying that CA would implement that because of the movie, but because it's much more easier than the original style. I really am curious to see how this works out. If you cast your mind back to the pictures of the Hypaspist that were shown on Macedon's profile page, those shields were not locked. Hmmm...![]()

Yes,the first thing I will also do when I get Rome 2 is test the phalanx formation in custom battle.About the interlocking shields, mods for Rome 1 have already done it before by using the shield-wall special ability. However I want CA to make it more properly of course. What worries me a lot about the phalanx formation is
1)no usage of depth (no 2nd and 3rd lines attacks with the dorys and no othismos propably for the hoplites and only 3 lines of attacks instead of 5-6 for the phalangites,as we saw in the Nile video) and
2)in the Nile video they cannot hold their (wrong) formation at all and as soon as the enemy approaches they abandon formation and run randomly. Also in the Nile pictures we saw a pike phalanx fighting completely disorganized and without proper lines but as a mass.So the signs so far are not at all encouraging.
And the most discouraging sign for me so far for the hoplite phalanx is this
I guess you get my point. They have created this picture by copying a picture of the movie 300 and that is not at all encouraging, because in this movie the phalanx was nothing like it really was.
And judging by this picture
they have generally messed up the spearmen units,as in this picture they don't even have proper reach to attack with the second line too,but they also don't maintain their formation properly.
Anyway,we'll see my friend. The game is very close now.At the moment I have very low expectations from the phalanx formation in the game and the spearmen units in general, but we'll see soon enough.
I am extremely cautious when it comes to these formations in Rome 2. That Nile picture did look suspect.
I did like the Shield Wall ability and Roma Surrectum added it in nicely. CA has the ability to do a good job on this but yeah, the lack of pictures on these formations and the picture of the Sacred Band which is almost a replica of the 300 movie poster, are not very good signs.
I remember first seeing that Carthage picture. I really didn't know what to think. Hoplite Phalanx's were upright shield walls. Even the guys standing upright behind the front rows of the Phalanx are the same as the movie picture.
I believe the Pike Phalanx will be reliable overall, but I'm getting the feeling that it is just a "pinning" unit and not a killing unit. That's why the Romans eventually were pushing through.
I fear some serious backlash if these formations are not done well. I can understand how hard they are to make but it's just something that needs to be made right, especially because in this era, a large amount of factions rely on it.

I want to know what kind of elite units the Iceni will have. I've really gotten tired of seeing guys without armor, it's not like their bare chest hairs can deflect an arrow...
Why there isn't next units preview? I am very dissapointed...
