Neat! I like this, you can see that the garrisons will be pretty sizable - these two have seven and six units respectively.

yeah, increasing the number of garrison units is only a good thing and prevents players from blitzing.

Not only players. It also prevents important AI factions to get destroyed on the first turns.

I remember the Garrison Mod on Shogun 2 actually made the survivability of the Oda and Tokugawa actually possible.

Fantastic! So a Defensive Alliance and a Military Alliance? Nice. Not necessarily a Vassal system.

Principes have less armour than Triarii, is this because the latter are spearmen?

Triarii, especially in the earlier era of the Roman military were the among wealthiest troops and thus had the best equipment available. And they were Spearmen.

Ah ok that make sense. When do the Principes come into the pictures? After Marius or was there some form of them before?

I'm no expert but I think the Principes were upper-mid tier soldiers, having some experience and wealth so placing them above Hastati in the order of battle but below the Triarii. All pre-Marian I think, being Camillian and subsequently Polybian.

Did they throw their spears like the hastati throw javelins etc? And was the army composition more based on hastati etc or triarii? Thanks

Romans mainly fought in three lines as far as I know. Until Marian reforms these were made up of Velites (skirmsihers) which harassed enemies to provoke a charge or just weaken them, if enemy got too close they retreated and left Hastati (first line of the three) to deal with enemies, these were most inexperienced and poorest soldiers. If they couldn't handle the enemy they retreated to Principes- more experienced and richer soldiers and if even Principes couldn't handle the enemy they retreated behind Triarii most experienced and richest soldiers, lower in numbers, which depending on situation fought the enemy and broke them or covered retreat of the rest of the army. Hastati and Principes did most of the job as far as I know.
Triarii carried Hasta spears which were not used for throwing. Originally Hastati and Triarii used them but by the time of second punic war only Trarii carried them.
But yeah, give a shot at Wikipedia, it has some more info about it.

No, they would sit kneeling with their spears facing the enemy until required to join the fray; the vast majority of the infantry were hastati (the youngest men, usually armoured with just a chest plate) and principes (a little older, often armoured with mail coats). Meanwhile, the poorest Romans served as skirmishers (such as the velites, men clad in wolf-skin caps and armed with javelins), slingers etc.

The Romans would deploy in a checkerboard formation like the 5 on a dice.

The Hastati formed the front line and where the youngest soldiers if things would go bad for them, they could retreat between the ranks of the Principes and Principes and Hastati would fight (Principes where slightly older soldiers with better equipment) and if even that line would be in trouble all would retreat to the Triari who where the oldest soldiers the veterans with the best equipment, if it came to the Triarii the romans would fight like a hoplite phalanx. A saying in Rome "It has come to the Triari" ment that the situation was dire.

Before all this, the Velites would skirmish with the enemy

I emulated this fighting style a lot in Rome I and EB, it was lots of fun
