Default rtw crash after about an hour?

it never fails after about an hour of play sometimes a bit more, my game will crash on an end turn or on a battle or just whenever. Anyone else get this and anyone got any fixes? I'm running the steam version, and it does it on mods and vanilla.

Has it always been happening since you originally downloaded it?

A suggestion is to go to your hard disk and look in /program files/steam/steam apps/common

There you should find your RTW folder and rename it by adding an additional number or letter. Now go to steam and download a fresh copy. Check to see if it plays normally before adding mods.. Loading over the original files or verifying doesn't always work as well.

Proculus: Divine Caesar, PLEASE! What have I done? Why am I here?
    Caligula: Treason!
Proculus: Treason? I have always been loyal to you!
Caligula: [laughs insanely] That IS your treason! You're an honest man, Proculus, which means a bad Roman! Therefore, you are a traitor! Logical, hmm? Ha, ha, ha!

Do you get an Error message? It could also be overheating problem, it can happen if it is very hot in your country and then your CPU or some of your components overheat, but mostly CPU overheats.
American, French, Israeli and British government's ILLEGAL aggression against the Syrian people, without any proof for chemical attacks in Douma, and without waiting for OPCW to conduct their investigation..
Sons of *******, leave that poor, war torn country in peace.
If you are a citizen of one of these countries, then DO NOT ask any help from me on these forums, since, in protest against this aggression by your governments, I do not provide assistance/help anymore.
Let Syria be finally in peace.

A video of false chemical attack in Douma, Syria, which led to Western illegal attacks.

I wouldn't think it is the CPU because the entire OS would crash. The graphics cards are the issue because to get the edge of performance means energy chewing cards. There are nice sedate cards like the NV GTX 650 base model which probably won't go over 60 C even under full load.

Furmark will test how well the graphics temps are going. The ideal temp for the GPU is 40 to 60 C. The 6970 is something of wattage eater, so over heating could be an issue. If you get temps of 100 C or so then you know your GPU is getting ready for its funeral.

it's not a computer problem it's a game problem. Nothing gets hot or unstable, it's been through benchmarks and other high end games, it's a custom built rig. I get an error message that Rome has encountered an error and I get a crash to desktop. It's only with the rtw games, doesn't happen with medieval 2, empire, shogun, only Rome. I've done a complete reinstall a few times because of different mods, including delete the folder and start fresh. It's just Rome and it's vanilla and mods both, I just get the ctd after an hour or so

RTW is bugged. Your best chance is a mod that has most of the fixable bugs fixed.

Well some other options is fix it so RTW only uses a single core of your CPU. Another is to expand memory usage above the 2GB limit imposed by the 2005 era RTW. These are reputed to improve stability.
