How long before we get to see a working phalanx in action?
Thanks
They will release a lot of info this month, let's hope your question in answered by then.
I wonder if the Phalanx is a pinning force in this game, or the meat grinder like it was in RTW.
well, they don't show it meaning it's seriously wrong.
I really-really doubt Warscape could do justice to this formidable force. From what we've seen so far, there are no real animation of units fighting in formations, Romans break the line all the time to go for individual enemy soldiers, on every screen.
And on the only screen we have of a fighting phalanx, it looks like a mob of men with long pikes, not even having any resemblance of ranks.

My wild imaginative speculation suggests this may be one of those lower-tiered, more horrible pike units, while upper-tiered/ more experienced units will form a more recognizable phalanx.
Honestly though, it's not THAT bad, eyebrow-raising WTF did they spend their budget on, ice cream? kind of disappointing, but not Ima not preorder and raise hell kind of disappointing.
Not until we figure out how well they work in MP that is.

It's not a about Warscape. Recent previews have shown that cohesion is possible on Warscape. By the way, if you turned off guard mode in RTW the same thing happened. The unit lost formation over time.
In real life similar things would happen. Watch the Battle of Gaugamela in the movie Alexander. The phalanx becomes more and more disordered as it pushes onward.
I'm OK with the historical inaccuracies that CA has in its game, it is a game after all and not an interactive encyclopaedia. But What you have said is perhaps my biggest gripe of Rome 2. Rome's empire was BUILT on this strategy of not breaking ranks. There was not stupid 1v1, Romans fought as a unit, as one, each protected by the shield of his right-hand companion. Without this they would have been no better than a well-trained mob, which is what your picture shows. How hard is it to have the romans not break rank and keep formation. I can see one little dude in the picture casually standing between the two frontlines!! suicide!
Protected by the man next to him? Perhaps. Not in the way you describe. You're describing what appears to be a Geek phalanx. Roman shields had a central grip and the person could and probably would be standing in the center of it. That would mean he's covered evenly on both sides except when he uses his sword arm. Look at the pic from the TWR2 box cover for example.
In recent footage there is formation fighting with stabs and thrusts. Yes, a unit would try to maintain cohesion but they would fight the opponent ahead of them. So, 1v1 in a way.
Oh, so what are they meant to do then? Stand there in a neat formation and try to hit them with their swords at pike's range?
The very reason Rome ditched the hoplite phalanx and went with their iconic fighting style is flexibility. Their big advantage against stiff formations like phalanxes was that they could get in there and exploit weaknesses. You don't need to be in a neat line to be able to assist each other in combat and fight as a cohesive unit.
Most phalanxes in R1 don't stand a chance against Urbans even in a frontal fight.

500 - Internal Server Error
If that's what the phalanx looks like I'm not buying the game.
you know, these 'smart' comments does not contribute anything to the thread and could be considered disruptive.
I really hate the behaviour of some people on R2TW borders who flame others just because they do not share their views on the all-shiny-and-amazing R2.
Granted, there are many stupid complaints but being concerned that 1 months before the release we haven't seen the most iconic fighting formation in Antiquity is a legitimate concern.
So please contribute smth to this discussion or post somewhere else, ok?
Nope, these guys are Macedonians, you could see from the equipment. Not the most elite, perhaps, but neither they are Machimoi

Totally chaotic...
I like it.
Looks like that they didn't reform in time.
In one of the video of the battle of the Nile, the animations of the phalanx were messy, the men didn't use their sarissas properly.
Yes, phalanx is what i have been waiting for all this time...
