    Default Need a new CPU

    Hey guys.

I am looking for a new CPU for my computer(I built it myself.

I've got a 2,80 gigahertz AMD Phenom II X6 1055T processor and I'm looking for an update.

I recently got a new GPU, a GTX 780, but I realize that my old processor is keeping my games back, so I'm looking for a new one. Do any of you guys have any recommendations?

    I was looking at a
Intel Core i7-3820 Processor (this one is much more expensive, but I'm not sure why)
    and a
    AMD FX-8350 8-Core Processor

Do you have any knowledge about these?
And do you even have any better processors to recommend?

    I'm also using a
ASUSTeK Computer INC. SABERTOOTH 990FX Rev 1.xx Motherboard for those of you who may be wondering.(will this work with any newer Processors?)

I'll appreciate any kind of help you can give me

THe intel is more expensive because its faster? in total war games it has nearly double the FPS that AMDs 8350 can put out. Altho the 3820 is a terrible choice unless you need quad channel memory and plan to run 3-4 gpus

    otherwise Z77 + 3770K or Z87 + 4770K if going high end, 4670k or 3570k for regular quadcore.

If not overclocking then the 3820 has the edge due to memory bandwidth and L3 cache amount. regardless

For Total War games Intel is hands down faster to the point AMDs cherry picked $1000 processor still can't rival an Intel chip at the $200 price point.

As for your motherboard it does in fact support the FX 8350.

What exactly is "Z77" or "Z87"?

So therefore; if I intend to Overclock, I should go 3820, and if not, then 3770k or 4770k? Correct.

I do play a variety of different games, though.
Do you know anything about how Intel performs for other titles, such as Metro, Guild Wars 2, Battlefield 3 or Planetside 2 for instance compared to AMD?

But it also supports the Intel processors as well, or just the FX8350?

    World of Warcraft
    Planetside 2
    Skyrim
    Total War
    all prefer Intel

if overclocking 3770k or 4770k for 4 cores / 8 threads aka same style CPU as the 3820 can overclock as well but a decent motherboard is more costly altho I can work with all platforms.
what really matters is your budget.

The 990FX board only supports AMD chips period try using an Intel chip in it and say goodbuy to board and chip lol.

In general with recording or streaming video of a game your playing the 8350 performs well, otherwise if just straight up gaming the FX 8350 fails to beat out even budget Intel i5 processors. People can argue this all they want but having the hardware here to play with tells me all i need to know. AMD CAN COMPETE when it comes to AVG fps, where they fail is the Minimum FPS in a multitude of games.

Regardless give me a budget to work with and ill match you a CPU + Motherboard and Ram kit.

What is the main difference between a Z77 and a Z87?

Do you also know anything about any new Processors that are being released in near the future?

only amd should release something in this year or early next year

Z77 is for ivy bridge and z87 is for haswell, there are some changes in the chipset but they wont matter to you

    Hey guys, I'm planning a Z87 + 4770K solution.

I'm also planning to go with: Crucial DDR3 BallistiX Sport 16GB KIT for ram, because they are on sale(because I am Norwegian, I am using a Norwegian site called Komplett.no, but if you know any other good sites that deliver to Norway, I'm open to checking those out as well). I'm assuming that they will work just fine?

Lastly, I am considering getting a water cooling solution as well; because I've heard that it can get pretty hot, especially when overclocking. Do you guys have any recommendations on that?

sounds good, just make sure you have a solid z87 motherboard, aka make sure it has decent VRM section and Heatsink, Not all boards are created equal. With Intels Z77 platform and the 3770k motherboard didnt matter as much, with Haswell it once again matters.

What do you think about the:
    MSI Z87 MPOWER, Socket-1150 motherboard?

    little more than you need

    Gigabyte UD4H
    MSI GD65 Gaming
    ASRock Extreme 4

In terms of USD anything below $140 tends to have crap VRMs anything above $200 is not really worth the cost.

As for cooling just get a Swiftech H220, its a closed loop ALL-in-one however it IS expandable unlike the Corsair units etc, its fairly quiet and out performs anything in its price range.
