i see. then, start year is 1545, japan will be divided. and, about invasion of Jurchens in 1583--you don't have to make Jurchen faction or Jurchen(manchuria) map. it is like mongol invasion in medival total war2. all you have to do is create 2or3 full stack of rebellion army at nothern Hamgyeongdo(maybe near to Hamhung-bu).how about chosun unit roster? maybe i need those unit roster to search imformation about chosun skill tree or buildings. or if unit roster is not decided, may i search for chosun millitary unit, too?

Regarding the map I'm having problems with the Geoje port in the Jinju mok. Ports have to be connected to a settlement by a road, so I can only connect a port on an island to a settlement that's also on this island. My current solution is to turn this island into a province called Geoje-gun with Geoje as the settlement and Geoje port as the port. Is this accurate or should call this province something else?

An early version of this map the capital of Gyeongsang was Daegu but none of your provinces contain this city. Should I remove it or create a new region called Daegu-bu?

Here is the current roster. There's 3 main types of soldiers: unarmoured (Koreans in their normal clothing), brigandine (soldiers brigandine armour), and warrior monks.

    Cavalry
    Korea Bodyguard: brigandine + sword
Korean Horse Archers - brigandine + bow + sword
Korean Lancers - brigandine + spear
    Korean Flail/Sword Cavalry - brigandine + flail

    Infantry
Korean Levy - unarmoured + spear
Korean Trident Infantry - unarmoured + trident

Korean Slingers - unarmoured + rock
Korean Archer - unarmoured + bow + sword

i think your soultion is best. it seems good to turn island to new province. new province's name will be Geoje-hyeon. Geoje as settlement and port's name is Geoje port(or Gyeongsang right naval port). Geoje port was largest naval port in chosun so it would be important for chosun.
And, can i suggest to make new province? during research, i found Kanghwa(port of hansung-bu) was an island. and it was one of the most important region in korea because Kanghwa was second capital of chosun. as manchus invaded korea in 17C, chosun's royal family flee to here.

    this is picture of Kanghwa-do.
could you add kanghwa to your map?

and thanks for unit roster. i think it is good. but isn't there are to less Heavy infantry for chosun? i think it will be nice to add two or three heavy infantry for chosun.

i added some essential units for chosun to your roster and added some discriptions to units, too.

<chosun 正軍with cotton armour, and trident>

正軍(modify of chosun trident army)-unarmoured or wear black paper armour or cotton armour, use trident

    正軍means chosun levy.

Chosun mobilized army by conscription . Man at the age of 60 until the age of 16, even including slave, was the target of conscription. chosun organized them 3people per group and extracted one people to service for army.
The majority of 15~16c chosun army armed with short spear. So majority of 正軍 was spearman. They buy spear and armor of itself.
But because of long peace, and due to the physical, financial burden there was widespread military shirker in chosun. As a result, poor people who can't defray money to shirk millitary service become majority of chosun army and there armor and weapons was as poor as there will to millitary service. This was main reason of weaken chosun army.
But at least they wear uniform and armed with spear because soldiers who did not armed purnished by court-martial. Especially, chosun levy who live in frontier areas well armed with 철갑 or 지갑 and trained well to fight with Ruzhens or Woku.

保人(modify of chosun levy)-unarmoured or wear black paper armour, use bow and hwando(or spear)

    保人 means chosun's basic archer.

Chosun mobilized army by conscription . Man at the age of 60 until the age of 16, even including slave, was the target of conscription. chosun organized them 3people per group and extracted one people to service for army. Remaining 2 people financially supported 正軍 and his family, and treated as reserve forces.
보인 must reserve their weapons and sometimes belonged to reserve forces named '雜色軍‘and undergo military training. but their burden was bearable compared to 正軍’s. Because they lived long life in peace, 保人 preferred firing rather than melee combat.

chosun guerrilla(義兵, Righteous Army)-unarmoured or wear black paper armour, armed with bow and sword(or flail)

chosun guerrilla(Righteous Army) is volunteered battle force to save there country and family. Most famous guerrillas during history of korea was guerrillas who rised in arms during Imjin war. They volunteered due to cultural sense of superiority and hostility to invaders. They rised almost all of regions occupied by japan. So japanese army suffered to defend supply route by them. Unlike chosun army, they was nimble and had high fighting spirit.
Righteous armies included peasants, scholars, former government officials, and Buddhist warrior monks as well.
They constantly did guerrilla warfare and sometimes crused japanese troops, interrupted japanese supply line. Maybe there activity will be comparable to spanish guerrillas who bothered French army during Peninsular War!

    <image of chosun handgonner>

chosun handgonners-unarmoured or wear black leather armour, use handgonne.

chosun slingers(chosun Seokjeon army)-unarmoured or wear black leather armour, use sling.

Seokjeon group is specialized slingers. Seokjeon was a blood game playing in groups by throwing a stone to each other.
Old days of the Joseon era, Seokjeon was a festival to be held nationwide. Old man, young people also participated and they divided into two groups and threw stones to each other like crazy man.
At this time, both sides war in an organized manner like an army. After this bloody game, Only injured and stones remained along with the cheers of the winner
Decade ago, seokjeon group was an important army in Korea. Korea has operated army specialized to sling and called them 'Seokjeon army'. They threw a large stone, almost as big as human face to there enemy!
during woku's invade in 1510, they destroyed Japanese army, and as japanese resist behind the shield, they destroyed their head with their shield. Seokjeon group had a good fighting spirit. and during imjin war, some cowardly generals of Korea always accompanied seokjeon army when they run away. Because they were very reliable army!
Gimhae and Andong was especially famous for this Seokjeon army.

chosun Firebombers - unarmoured + firebomb + sword

chosun Fire Rockets - unarmoured + fire rockets + sword

    monks army

    [added units for chosun]

    <image of chosun kabsa>

chosun Kabsa(甲士)-aromoured with lamellar armour or brigandine armour, use bow and hwando(sword)

Kabsa means chosun's well trained, armed soldiers

Generally, kabsa means well armoured and armed soldiers. The beginning of chosun kabsa system was the royal bodyguard during early chosun period.
Early chosun's kabsa consisted with a few good man who was royal people and extraordinairy in erranty.
chosun dispensed millitary tests and increased emplyoment of gapsa. As a result, gapsa changed from royal bodyguard to career soldier, and ordinally people could be kapsa, even though they were not royal man. and during chosun colonized northern territory, they defended borderland by Ruzhens or maintenanced of public order in regions.
In 16c, kabsa became large military organization of chosun, and there number was over tens of thousands. At this time, kabsa was standing army rather than a Special Forces. But they were elite forces with ambition to be get ahead with there Martial arts skills.
Altough the use of close combat weapons such as the sword or spears was not better than the samurai of Japan, They were much more elite than 正軍 or 保人. Above all, they were very good at archery, because their promotion was depended on their archery skills!

<(maybe) image similar to chosun tiger hunter. tiger hunters wear tiger leathers on their armour)

Chosun tiger hunter(捉虎甲士)--armoured with brigandine armour(with tiger leather on) or lamellar armour(with tiger leather on), use two swords.

Chosun tiger Hunter is the elite troops selected from kabsa for tiger hunting. In chosun, Tiger has been recognized as a disaster such as smallpox plague. So Tiger hunting was effective in ensuring the people's safety. It was able to do military training through hunting and was able to recruit a skilled soldier.
Forces that are submitted to the tiger hunt was made up of those with excellent martial arts among the kapsa. Usually they were in charge of the royal escort, and it is no need to say they are elite army.
Shortly after invasion of japanese, Korea felt the need to enhance the ability to perform close-range battle, so they teached a two-weapon fighting in the process of millitary education. As the royal bodyguard of the king, excellent swordsmanship skills was requested.

[chosun army that need building 'Hunryun Dogam(army training center)']

    <image of chosun
    殺手>

chosun 殺手-aromoured with lamellar armour or brigandine armour, use spear and hwando(sword)

殺手 means close combat veteran of the Korean troops

1592, Korea almost collapsed by invasion of Japan. During investigating the cause of the defeat, they found one of them was a strong close combat ability of Japan.
So chosun government promoted a policy of training the soldiers of the professional in charge of close-range battle, during the Japanese people and ming dynasty's Truce period. In this process, surrendered Japanese army and Gihyo Shinsho of ming dynasty were used to teach and grow the close combat ability of the Korean army.
close combat army of Korea that have been trained through this process was called 殺手, and they belonged to the standing army organization called 'Hunryun Dogam(army training center)'. There combat skills are still below the samurai, but their ability will be well demonstrated if there is a capacity of commander.
    require Hunryun Dogam(army training center)'

chosun 射手-armoured with light lamellar armour or cotton armour. . use bow and spear

射手 means veteran archers of the Korean troops

    require Hunryun Dogam(army training center)'

    <image of chosun musketter>

chosun musketeer(砲手)-armoured with black leather armour. use musket and hwando(sword)

1592, the Korean government has received a big shock to musket's power and close combat ability of the Japanese army. Thereafter, setting of Korea tried to mass produce musket by duplicating the japanese musket. Since then, chosun government tried to train standing army armed with musket during the truce period of the Ming and Japan, the surrended Japanese army was used in this process.

Actually, Tridents was very rarely used in Joseon army, as they are considered hard to master to full extent... It was not used as a main weapon. Rather an auxiliary weapon used by few very well trained soldier. Their duty was to hold enemies' sword and spear while other soldiers could attack them. So, it is somewhat odd to see Korean militia (Jeong-Kun) armed with trident. They should probably be armed with short spear - shorter than what Ashigaru uses- since Joseon army had a hard time facing long-speared Japanese infantry with their relatively short spear. I guess it can be compared somewhat to what Greek Hoplites faced when fighting Macedonian phalanx.

Also, tiger leather was used as a cape to show off their martial skills. Since these tiger hunters were considered as nearly heroic figure to people and other fellow soldiers, tiger leather signified their ability. So, it was used more of decoration rather than have a great practical function.. You know, like leopard skin that Hetairoi used on their horses. wow. it looks awesome. I really appreciate for your effort.

but isn's it looks to barren? i thought korea was very small compared to japan, so i suggested 24 regions but it is bigger than my thought.

I would say 4th picture seems most appropriate.... Also, I don't think everyone should wear tiger skin as cape, as Kap-sa didn't had to kill a tiger to be part of tiger hunter. According to
Gyeongguk daejeon Byeoung-jeon (兵典) you only had to took an exam to show your physical prowess and martial skills. While a person who killed two tigers by himself were accepted without any exam, it was very rare occasion. As a result, there were quite a few Kap-sa who hadn't kill a tiger to show off. So, by giving tiger skin cape to about half the units, it would give nice variety on units.

I added some descriptions of your cavalry unit roster.

<this picture is unamoured light cavalry>

chosun light cavalry(輕騎)-light armoured, use bow and hwando(sword)

Literally, light Cavalry is a soldier focused on speed and shotting. The history of korea's light cavalry dates back to three kingdoms period(b.c 50~ a.d 668). Mural of the ancient Three Kingdoms period shows korea used this cavalry very long time ago. Cavalry of Korea, was able to fire accurate and rapid and tricked enemy with their brilliant equitation, just like the famous Mongol calvary. However, they were not good at close combat because they were specialized in archery and equitation. In addition, they selected fast mobility and sacrificed protection. They only use the sword in front of the enemy when enemies collapse and ran away.

<this picture is sword cavalry with brigandine>

chosun sword cavalry(甲騎)-armoured with lamellar armour or brigandine armour. use hwando(sword)

chosun sword cavalry is a cavalry wearing thick armor and using sword. In the Korean army , Infantry that use the sword was less, but the calvary who use the sword was less even. So cavalry who could use the sword well belonged to the elite cavalry among the cavalry. Cavalry who use sword was in a position of economic strength to support long time learning of swordmanship and equitation, and armed well with good armour and weapons.
They played a role in solidifying aspect of battlefield and was placed in a critical situation.

<this picture is chosun lancer cavalry with lamellar armour.>

chosun lancer cavalry(突騎)-armoured with lamellar armour or brigandine armour. use spear

The light infantry and lancer cavalry both emphasis on speed. But unlike light cavalry, lancer cavalry is a heavy cavalry and their aim is charging to formations of the enemy to shatter them all. Many of the early chosun cavalry consisted of numerous Lancer cavalry and horse archer. however, as time passes, the emphasis on archery excluded lance from required martial arts and chosun's lance cavalry has weakened.
1583, when Jurchen tribe invaded Hamgyeongdo, Shinrip defeated 20,000 Jurchen tribe with only 500 soldiers who were trained as Lancer cavalry.
However, there was no heavy cavalry under the command of Shinrip when he was against the Japanese army in 1592. There were only untrained 8000 horse archers under Shinrip. Shinrip tried to defeat Japanese military by charging, but he failed.

<this picture is flail calvary with lamellar armour. 15~16c korean army used lamellar armour more than brigandine)

chosun flail calvary(鐵騎)-armoured with lamellar armour or brigandine armour. use flail

Flail cavalry is a soldier strong as steel, and they do not retreat in any situation. There was a soldier armed with flail in Ming army during imjin war. Flail had a destructive force when wielding flail's centrifugal force combined with speed of the horse.
In the 1597 battle of Jiksan, Ming's flail cavalry charged on the Japanese infantry and made them retreat. chosun also used flail after Imjin war, and in 1636 invade of Manchus, manchu and chosun all used flail and it suffered extensive damage all with each other.
Chosun's scholar Lee ik said, "Bow is no more necessary because of musket, and sword is no more necessary because of flail."

so, the roster i suggest is like this.

    Cavalry
    Korea Bodyguard:
    brigandine or lamellar + sword
Korean light cavalry - unamoured or light armoured+ bow + sword
    Korean Lancers -
    brigandine or lamellar + spear
    Korean Flail Cavalry -
    brigandine or lamellar + flail
    Korean sword Cavalry-brigandine or lamellar+sword

    Infantry
Korean Levy(正軍) - unarmoured or gambeson or paper armour + spear or trident
    Korean archer militiar(保人)
    - unarmoured or gambeson or paper armour + sword and bow

    Korean Slingers(
石戰兵) - unarmoured or paper armour + rock
Korean Guerillas(義兵) - paper armour or lamellar armour + bow + sword (like Hattori bandits)

    korean kabsa(甲士)-lamellar or brigandine+bow+sword

    korean tiger hunter(
    捉虎甲士)-lamellar or brigandine(put around tiger leather)+two swords
korean elite combat infantry (殺手)-lamellar or brigandine+spear(or pudao, sword)
korean elite archer(射手)-paper armour or light lamellar armour+bow+sword
    korean musketter(
    砲手)-paper armour+musket+sword

Korean Firebombers - unarmoured + firebomb + sword
    Korean Handgonnes
    - unarmoured + Hand cannon + sword

    Monks
Warrior Monk Spears - monk + spear
Warrior Monk Swords - monk + sword
Warrior Monk Archers - monk + bow + sword

Here is really good korean army samples for this mod.

    http://www.serang.co.kr/1029

This is the adimiral Yi figure set.
Yi Sun-shin (Hangul: 이순신; Hanja: 李舜臣; April 28, 1545 – December 16, 1598) was a Korean naval commander, famed for his victories against the Japanese navy during the Imjin war in the Joseon Dynasty, and is well-respected for his exemplary conduct on and off the battlefield not only by Koreans, but by Japanese Admirals as well. Military historians have compared his naval genius to that of Admiral Horatio Nelson. His title of Samdo Sugun Tongjesa (삼도수군통제사; 三道水軍統制使), literally meaning "Naval Commander of the Three Provinces," was the title for the commander of the Korean navy until 1896.
Perhaps his most remarkable military achievement occurred at the Battle of Myeongnyang. Outnumbered 333 ships to 13, and forced into a last stand with only his minimal fleet standing between the Japanese Army and Seoul, Yi delivered one of the most astonishing defeats in military history.
Despite never having received naval training or participating in naval combat prior to the war, and constantly being outnumbered and outsupplied, he went to his grave as one of few admirals in world history who remained undefeated after commanding as many naval battles as he did (at least 23).
Yi died at the Battle of Noryang on December 16, 1598. With the Japanese army on the verge of being completely expelled from the Korean Peninsula, he was mortally wounded by a single bullet. His famous dying words were, "The battle is at its height...beat my war drums...do not announce my death."

As I said, trident should be wielded not by Korean levy but Korean elite combat infantry and even that, it's use should be very limited. I think probably 5-10% of elite combat infantry should be armed with trident. Korean levy do not have an ability to use trident, as they are expansive to make and difficult to master.

I can add more regions to Korea so feel free to research more regions (I've uploaded a map of how Korea currently looks). Korea's regions are larger than Japan's because I added a lot of regions to Japan when I was making another mod. Regions with ports would be most useful as they'll allow Korea to recruit more ships.

Can you provide me with some Korean names for the Korean generals, admirals, and agents.

Can you provide me with an image of a soldier in paper armour or light lamellar as it's difficult to make a unit if I don't know what it looks like. Would they look like the soldier wearing the cotton armour?

Who should be the faction leader of Joseon (Chosun is often romanised as Joseon)? The faction leader will be a general so if I make the emperor a general he'll appear on the battlefield as a general.

Unsure if units can use more than one type of weapon. If they can I'll try to make a unit that uses a mixture of tridents and spears.

Since she was ambitious and powerful Queen backed up by powerful Yun clan, she was able to rule even after his son reached adulthood. She will rule until he was 31 (1565). Myeongjong was frequently sick and sired only one son, who died early.
Joseon kings never fought as a general in the army. As far as I know, there was never a single instance which King of Joeseon fought as general.

Maybe if you replaced the standard-bearer with a spear-armed model? Would that work?

    - Sin Rip(born 1546)

General of Korea mid-term. He was known for crushing 20,000 Jurchen with 500 lancer cavalry at 1583. Because of this at 1592, he was most famous korean general and erected to defend japanese army. 8,000 horse archer was under is command. - Kim si min(born 1554)

General of Korea mid-term. He is known for seige of Jinju. In order to advance to the Jeolla, in October 1592, Japanese army sent 30,000 troops led by Hasegawa and Nagaoka to Jinju Castle. The Japanese heartily approached Jinju castle. They expected another easy victory at Jinju but the Korean general Kim Si-min defied the Japanese and stood firm with his 3,800 men. Again, the Koreans were outnumbered. Kim Si-min had recently acquired around 170 arquebuses, equivalent to what the Japanese used. Kim Si-min had them trained and believed he could defend Jinju.
The Japanese charged and began to bring ladders to scale the wall. They also brought a siege tower to try to gain the higher ground. As a counter, the Koreans unleashed massive volleys of cannons, arrows, and bullets. Surprised, Hosokawa tried another angle of approach by using his arquebuses to cover the soldiers scaling the wall. This still had no success because the Koreans ignored the bullets and smashed ladders with rocks and axes. When the Koreans began to lob mortars down at the Japanese, the Japanese began to lose even more men.
After three days of fighting, Kim Si-min was hit by a bullet on the side of his head and fell, unable to command his forces. The Japanese commanders then pressed even harder on the Koreans to dishearten them. But the Koreans fought on. The Japanese soldiers were still unable to scale the walls even with heavy fire from arquebuses. The Koreans were not in a good position since Kim Si-min was wounded and the garrison was now running low on ammunition.------(by wikidapia)

    - Gwak jeo-u(born 1552)

Gwak Jae-u disrupted Japanese supply lines around the Nakdong River in many guerrilla actions. Gwak also had the distinction of winning Korea's first land victory of the war in the Battle of Uiryeong. In part of a two-pronged offensive into Jeolla, Ankokuji Ekei led 6th division men from the south. Ankokuji needed to cross the Nam River to reach Uiryeong, an objective. He had his men find the shallowest parts of the river and mark them with stakes. While Ankokuji's army slept, Gwak's men moved the stakes to deeper sections of the river. When the crossing began, the Japanese soldiers foundered in the deep water, and Gwak's army attacked them. In multiple attempts to cross the river, Ankokuji suffered many losses, and was forced to abandon his attack on Uiryeong. The battle gave the Korean government respect for Gwak's abilities, and he was placed in command of the Korean forces in and around Uiryeong and the nearby Samga.-----------------(by wikipedia)

But he was defeated by japanese army at Sang-gu and Chungju during 1592. Then, to protect and Imjin River, Pyongyang, he was appointed as 東邊防禦使(East-side defender) He died in 1601.

    - Gweon yul(born 1537)

When the Japanese forces invaded Korea in 1592, Kwon was appointed the mayor of Gwangju (광주; 光州), Jeolla province (전라도) and given the military command of the region. Kwon and his troops followed his commander Yi Gwang and headed towards Seoul to join the main force. However, Yi was eventually defeated by Japaneses at Yongin (용인). Kwon managed to retreat back to Gwangju, and gathered around 1,000 militia.
    Battle of Ichi
When Japanese troops at Geumsan (금산), Jeolla province began to move to Jeonju (전주), Kwon moved his army to Ichi (배고개; 이치; 梨峙), a gateway to Jeonju. 10,000 Japanese troops under Kobayakawa Takakage (小早川隆景) attacked Ichi. About 1,000 of Kwon's men fought and won the battle. Kwon supervised his unit by executing deserters personally, and his vanguard commander Hwang Jin (황진;黃進) kept fighting despite a gunshot injury. The battle resulted in the recapture of the Jeollan province.
    Siege of Doksan
The Joseon Government recognized Kwon's heroics, and named him the new Governor of the Jeolla province in the following year. Kwon then led an army of 10,000 to Gyeonggi to recapture Seoul once more, where he was joined by local militia and monks, which enabled Kwon to gather up to 20,000 men. Kwon's troops were stationed in the fortress Doksung (독성; 禿城) near Suwon (수원). Japanese led by Ukita Hideie (宇喜多秀家) laid siege to the fort for one month, and Kwon's army was running out of water supplies. One day, Kwon ordered to bring several war horses on the fort wall and wash them with grains of rice. From a distance, it looked like the horses were bathed with plenty of water. The Japanese, who were waiting for the fort's water supply to run out, lost their spirits and retreated to Seoul. Kwon chased the retreating Japanese, inflicting casualties of over 3,000 men. After the war, the king Sunjo built a monument on the top of Doksung named Saemadae (세마대; 洗馬臺), "the place where horses were washed", as a tribute to Kwon. After the battle, the Joseon government ordered Kwon to march northward and combat the Japanese in Seoul.
    Battle of Haengju
Kwon and his men set up camp in the run-down fortress of Haengju (행주산성; 幸州山城) near Seoul. Although his forces were joined by local militias led by Kim Chun Il and monk soldiers led by Cheo Yung, his entire unit in Haengju was no more than 2,800 men. Threatened by this action, Japanese commanders Kato Kiyomasa (加藤清正) and Ukita, attacked Haengju fortress with 30,000 men, trying to finish off Kwon's troops once and for all. Ukita, who never led the attack in the frontline directly, led the Japanese toward the fortress. The Battle of Haengju commenced early in the morning of 12 February 1593. Japanese troops under Kato and Ukita, armed with muskets, surrounded the fortress and launched several massive attacks. However, Kwon's forces and the civilians at the fortress resisted heavily, throwing rocks, arrows, iron pellets, burning oil and molten iron at the Japanese. Korean anti-personnel gunpowder weapons Hwachas (화차; 火車) and Bigyeok Jincholles (비격진천뢰; 飛擊震天雷) were also utilized in this battle. The Japanese, with over 10,000 casualties and top generals Ukita, Ishida Mitsunari, and Kikkawa Hiroie wounded, were compelled to retreat and fled the region. It was one of the three greatest Korean military victories during the Seven-Year War, along with the Battle of Hansan Island (한산대첩) and the Siege of Jinju (진주대첩).
    After the Battle of Haengju
After the battle, he kept his position, until the peace talks between Ming Dynasty and Toyotomi Hideyoshi began. Then he moved to the Jeolla province, and from then on, Kwon Yul became the Dowonsu (도원수, 導元帥), the Commander-in-chief of Korean forces. He was briefly removed from office due to his harsh treatment of deserters, but was restored back again in the following year. He ordered the Admiral of the Navy, Won Kyun, to battle the Japanese in the Battle of Chilchonryang, which was won by Japanese. However Admiral Yi Sun Shin was able to defeat the Japanese navy under Todo Takatora in the Battle of Myeongnyang. In 1597, Kwon and Chinese commander Ma Gui planned to combat the Japanese in Ulsan, but the Chinese commander-in-chief ordered Kwon to withdraw. Then Kwon tried to attack Japanese in Suncheon, but the idea was again rejected by Chinese.-------------(by wikipedia)

    - Song sang hyeon

Song sang hyeon is a general of Joseon who commanded Dongrae during Imjin war.
In 1592, when he heard japan invaded korea, he hurriedly gathered all the town-people and what soldiers he could find such as Jo Yeong Gyu, the magistrate of Yangsan. As soon as the Japanese completed the investment of the fortress surrounding it in five lines, with other troops crowding on the nearby fields and prepared to storm the fortress. The brave prefect took up his position in the upper story of the great gate of the fortress where, in accordance with the Korean custom, he beat upon a great drum and urged on his soldiers in the fight. Like he had done previously at Pusan, Konishi Yukinaga presented the Japanese demands erected a certain message saying, "Fight if you want to, or let us pass", for a clear road through to China. It was again rejected by the brave prefect with the words, "it is easy for me to die, but difficult to let you pass”. Konishi Yukinaga then followed in personally leading the attack against Dongrae during the 15th day of fourth month, in which he ordered for the commander to be captured alive.
After Busan, for a second time the ramparts of a Korean castle were swept with bullets. Even though the men that Song Sang-hyeon wielded were rather ill-equipped and poorly trained, the gallant defenders fought for eight hours before the enemy effected an entrance over their dead bodies. An assault was made and at least 3000 of the defenders were slaughtered, but only after a fight lasting twelve hours.
The Japanese general in command was so impressed with the bravery of this prefect that he had his body decently buried and erected over his grave a wooden monument on which he wrote “A Loyal Subject”, an epitaph than which none could be more grateful to a true Korean gentleman.
The cool defiance of Song Sang-hyeon has become a legend in Korea, and in the Chungnyolsa shrine at the foot of the castle hill in Dongrae, where he is honoured beside Chong Pal and Yun Heung-sin, there is a dramatic painting of him sitting impassively in his chair as the fierce Japanese approach.------(by wikipedia)

    - Hyujeong (leader of monk army)

Little is known of the early life of Seosan Daesa (Korean: 서산대사, Hanja: 西山大師) other than that he was born in 1520 and that he became a monk. As was common for monks in this time, he travelled from place to place, living in a succession of monasteries. Buddhist monks had been forced to keep a low profile since General Yi Seonggye had been forced to eject Buddhism from its state of total permeation of government, in order to gain the support of Neo-Confucian scholar-officials to consolidate his position against his Buddhist political opponents when he overthrew King Gongyang in 1392 to become King Taejo of Joseon.
Before ever having tested his hand as a military commander, Seosan was a first-rate Seon (Zen) master and the author of a number of important religious texts, the most important of which is probably his "Seongaguigam (禪家龜鑑)", a guide to Seon practice which is studied by Korean monks even today. Like most monks of the Joseon period, Seosan had been initially educated in Neo-Confucian philosophy. Dissatisfied, though, he wandered through the mountain monasteries. Later, after making a name for himself as a teacher, he was made arbiter of the Seon school by King Myeongjong, who was sympathetic towards Buddhism. He soon resigned from this responsibility, though, returning to the itinerant life, advancing his Seon studies and teaching at monasteries all around Korea.
At the beginning of the 1590s, Japanese Shogun Toyotomi Hideyoshi, after stabilising Japan during this era of warring nations, made preparations for a large scale invasion of Joseon. Joseon was unaware of the situation in Japan, however, and was unprepared for the Japanese aggression. In 1592, after rebuffing Japan’s request for aid in conquering China, approximately 200,000 Japanese soldiers invaded Joseon, and the Waeran (Japanese War) began. At the beginning of the invasion, King Seonjo fled the capital, leaving a weak, poorly-trained army to defend the country. In desperation he called on Seosan to organise monks into guerilla units. Even at 73 years of age he managed to recruit and deploy some 5,000 of these warrior monks, who enjoyed some instrumental successes.
At first, the government armies of Joseon suffered repeated defeats, and the Japanese armies marched north up to P'yŏngyang and the Hamgyŏng provinces. At sea, however, the Joseon navy, under the command of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, enjoyed successive victories. Throughout the country, loyal volunteer armies formed and fought against the Japanese together with the warrior monks and the government armies of Joseon.

The presence of Seosan's monks' army, operating out of the Heungguksa temple deep in the mountain of Yeongchwisan, was a critical factor in the eventual expulsion of the Japanese invaders in 1593 and again in 1598.----by wikipedia

    - Yujeong (leader of monk army), born 1544

In 1561, he passed the seon-gwa, the specialized civil service examinations for Buddhist monks. He corresponded with various scholars of the time including Pak Sa-am, Heo Ha-gok, and Im Baek-ho. In 1575, he was recommended for the headship of the Seon order, but refused and instead traveled to Myohyangsan. There he was instructed by preceptor Seosan Daesa. He went on to pass three years at Podŏksa on Kŭmgangsan, and later traveled through Palgongsan, Cheongnyangsan, and Taebaeksan.
With the outbreak of Japanese invasions in 1592, Yujeong joined his teacher Seosan's righteous army of monks. After Seosan retired due to his age, Yujeong took over the leadership of the monks' army. He led the army into battles at Pyongyang and Uiryeong in 1592, set up mountain fortresses through Gyeongsang in 1594, and joined in battle again at Ulsan and Suncheon.
In 1604, after the end of the war, he traveled to Japan on King Seonjo's orders to forge a peace accord with Tokugawa Ieyasu, and returned with 3500 Koreans who had been taken prisoner. Yu jeong's diplomatic missions established a resilient foundation for a series of major Joseon missions to Japan.

After his death in 1610 on Haeinsa, Yujeong was enshrined in the Pyochung Seowon in Miryang and at Suchungsa in Nyŏngbyŏn. He continues to be remembered in modern times, with numerous statues and other memorials around Korea. He has been cited together with Seosan Daesa as an example of a "patriotic-minded" Buddhist by the North Korean Korean Buddhist Federation. Yujeong's writings are preserved in the Samyeongjip (사명대사집, 四溟大師集) and Bunchungseo Nallok (분충서난록, 奮忠紓難錄).----by wikipedia
