Default Submap for Italy Campaign Introduction

Seems that this has gone pretty much underradar so far , but I am really pleased that they have made a different map for Italy for the Campaign introduction that will feature other cities in the Italian Peninsula ... at least this is what I have understood from some pictures I have seen around that portrayed the city of Bovianum , that woudl be the Samnitic Capital ...

I hope that the introductory campaign won't limit itself only to make a couple of guided conquests but allow you to make the whole Italian conquest campaign like facing Etruscans north , the Osci, Volsci , Samnites , Greeks, etc etc ...
but probably will be a guided tour throught the interface up for a couple of conquests .

That said the interesting thing will be the size dimension of the Peninsula and the possibility to have so differentiated campaign maps that could open the possibility to modding in new scenarios and specially focused mods like Conquest of Gaul , Conquest of Egypt , Parthian Campaigns etc ... eventually a supersized map of total conquest where you have the scale of the Italian peninsula applied to whole map ... and if the seasons could be modded in ( hopefully the subcampaign could have that feature ) then I woudl probably get what I want from that game ...

( apart the hated open testudo formation they did and that I really hope they will FIX!)

Doubt it. It will prob be a small limited map with small replayability. Wont even have regions for the whole of Italy. The northern half will prob be wilderness. Same with Sicily.

According to this picture there are several regions , but perhaps you are right about the limits up to the maximum of the available future small regions in the larger map , but its a good hope that it will be possible to have perhaps subcampaigns if the game will be made moddable for it .

This is what I'm hoping for as well. Maybe Caesar's conquest of Gaul would make a great mini campaign.

In one video there is even Calabria or Bruttium. So it's possible that the map include even Sicily or could be moddable to add the rest of Italy. I hope CA will make such a map.

This seems to be like the prologue campaign of RTW in its scale.

I image that if CA have made the Whole campaign map of that scale it would be really impressive e would have required more time but would have been the best in the universe.

I'm fairly sure the previous TW tutorials gave the player free rein at the end, so I see no reason why Rome II shouldn't.

It looks like the tutorial map extends to the bottom of the Italian peninsular, though it doesn't seem to go any further north.

I agree Domitanus. That would be awesome. Larger maps are always better. But it would have taken them longer. Just imagine a map of that scale would require more regions. More regions require more factions. More factions require more units and unique features. The schedule extends from there and there is much more that could pop up that extends it even further.

Can't say I agree with your conclusion about what the problem is with bigger maps.

If they'd decided to focus on the part of the world that is genuinely relevant to ancient rome and snipped off, say, the desert regions of Mauretania, Arabia and some of the steppe lands, jutland, and caledonia/hibernia...they could have made a very nice map of the prologue size with big cities and probably not had to worry much about adding factions, creating more units, etc.

They chose to go in a different direction.

Perhaps they'll listen to some of the critical feedback and give us more detailed, 4-12 TPY campaigns with large maps as an expansion or premium DLC.

I think the larger the scale they would have to add new regions. Otherwise the regions you currently have will be too large will showing land that should technically be covered by a important city. If Sicily was any larger you would have to have Messena.

More regions would require new factions if those regions were independent.

    Hopefully.

Yes they would have to (and should have) added more regions in some areas, removing regions in others. This would reverse the fact that we got Hibernia but lost Messana, for example.

That's a good way to put it. 'We got Hibernia but lost Messana'. Or substitute any city/region on the periphery of the map that few people care about, and only a tiny minority of factions will ever get remotely close to seeing and an important city around the Mediterranean.

Personally, I'm most disappointed in not seeing the Aetolian League, or a Besiegeable Syracuse. But I'm sure there are other, much more important places that are being under represented in the name of Gedrosia, Scythia (the province), Hibernia, etc.
