There are lots of spear units indicated in the unit lists for these factions. Does anyone know or can anyone intelligently speculate if they might have access to secondary edged weapons, for example swords?

Is the "please edgeucate me" part of the title a joke? Sure hope so.
And I don't know if spear units have swords.
I need to educate you how to spell Educate! I hope the hoplites will have swords.
In the 300 movie, the Spartans had swords as well, so I guess the "Spartan heroes" will be equipped in the same way!

"Steps to be taken in case Russia should be forced out of war considered. Various movements [of ] troops to and from different fronts necessary to meeting possible contingencies discussed. Conference also weighed political, economic, and moral effect both upon Central and Allied powers under most unfavorable aspect from Allied point of view. General conclusions reached were necessity for adoption of purely defensive attitude on all secondary fronts and withdrawing surplus troops for duty on western front. By thus strengthening western front [those attending] believed Allies could hold until American forces arrive in numbers sufficient to gain ascendancy."

Yah, 300 movie... made of a magnificent historical accuracy.
They did not supposed to be shirtless too....
Anyway, Greeks had 3 type of sword:
- The Xiphos, a small sword with double edged
- The Falcata, a small sword with one edge
- The Kopis, a sort of Falcata, with a curved edge.
I don't know wich one was used by Hoplites.

I'm here to give the edgeucation.
What seems the matter?
The picture that shows the heroes of Sparta doesn't show a secondary weapon. But the Spartan hoplites in Rome 1 didn't show a secondary weapon and they had swords for close encounters.
ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ- come and take them!
Hoplites are equipped with both the weapons mentioned.
We are edging closer to a solution. Can CA confirm secondary weapons for the spear units?
It depends if hoplites are considered a seperate unit to normal spearman. From what i've seen they use the same couple of animations which leads me to think that they will be considered spearmen, using only the spear. A phalanx unit might do though.
"Rem tene; verba sequentur." - Grasp the subject, the words will follow.
Secondary weapon for phalanxes, definately. But i doubt spear units and hoplites will have secondary weapons. Spear units are counters for cavalry and not a counter for infantry. This has been the norm throughout all TW-games. Some exclusive units may have it, though.
arrows, swords, spears and axes has different attack attributes which will rarely be mixed within a unit for balancing purposes.

Im positive that hoplites stand against heavy infantry though, their probable high defence will at least enable you to pin the enemy line.
