I had already mentioned this idea in another thread where the ability to give regions to your allies was discussed.
One of the problems with diplomaty in TW games are the limited possibilities to help your allies. For example in EB and now in De Bello Mundi playing Rome my heart was bleeding to see Bactria overrun by Steppe faction. Except of gifting money any help was inpossible.
So it would be nice if for example you could lend some units for your ally as an expeditionary corps for a limited time period. Advantage of such a system would be that you receive your units back (if they weren't KIA) and that they move as expeditionary corps even through hostile territories. Since they travel usually in small amounts as private persons the best way to implement it would be that the units disappier in your territory and then reappier after some time (due to the distance) next to you ally's capital. Important feature is that it's not possible to merge the corps with "native" units. It fights in a fully independent stack. If your position is strong enought you can demand to keep the tactical commando. Means that your ally moves the corps on strategy map but you can command the battle if you want, if not you just click auto-resolve with the same effect if you would give the tactical commando to your ally. Also the other way should be possible, so that you ask your allies to send expeditionary corps to you. Here once again. If you are mighty enough you have the full command other the troops, otherwise you are able only to do auto-resolve.
Advantages of such a feature are:
- you can active help (or receive help) your ally. It will be especialy effectively if factions have very different unit types. For example romans help hellenistic faction with heavy infantery or romans receive a corps with horse archers and heavy cavallery from steppe faction.
- if your corps survive the operation, you get highly experienced troops back.
- receive of an expeditionary corps from your ally doesn't affect your limit cap
- technologies could be a plausible bonus
Disadvantages are:
- you lack of unit's what can be an issue during the war, since due to the cap you cannot just recruite new units
- there is a risk that your corps will be defeated and completely destroyed during the operation abroad
- with every receive of expeditionary corps from your ally he becomes more and more angrily. That effectively prevent having lots of allied corps on your territory without paying for them. So you ask your ally only when you really need his troops and not just "to feel certain"
- if your ally start fighting with your corps against his enemy faction (don't forget you don't have the strategic commando, so you cannot prevent your ally from doing it) you are automaticaly in war with this faction. So before give the troops to your ally you have to ponder if it's worth the risk of the war with the other faction (if you are not already in war with them).
