I think it would help if you said specifically where in the example you are having difficulty. If it is with the entire example, then I am afraid it will be difficult to get a single person to give a succinct alternate explanation here on this forum.
I don't know much about fourier transforms, although they are of interest to me because I will be taking a signals and systems class this fall. (Fourier transforms are also used in various useful applications, such as image compression, which I am mildly interested in). I am looking at fourier transforms now but it would be a while before I understood them fully. Regardless, if I should come across something that would be of help I would offer it.
Anyway, if you could elaborate on which section is causing you difficulty it would help.
