Gutones is just another name for the Goths. However, Goths sounds cooler and better, and is more familiar to people. Why not have the Goths instead?

Goths of 5th century AD aren't the goths of the during 200BC.
Are called Goths in different moment of their history, as you said they are in the game as Gutones and also the Rugii. Personally I think gutones fit better.
The Goths have been referred to by many names, perhaps at least in part because they comprised many separate ethnic groups, but also because in early accounts of Proto-Indo-European and later Germanic migrations in general it was common practice to use various names to refer to the same group. The Goths clearly believed (as most modern scholars do)[9] that the various names all derived from a single prehistoric ethnonym that referred originally to a uniform culture that flourished around the middle of the first millennium BC—the original "Goths".
The word "Goths" derives from the stem Guton-",[10] This stem produces *Gutaniz in Proto-Germanic.

My impression is that they are mostly the same, and if there were differences I believe they were trivial
Gutones is the name that comes from Pyhteas who visited Northern Europe in the 4th century BC. It's the closest name to the start of the campaign period.

Well, taking a further example, we don't automatically group Prussia and German states immediately as Germany. We go from their respective states to the North Germany Federation, to Imperial Germany, and then just Germany.
