    Icon5 GAUL / CELTS - Desired Changes

    GAULS

Seeking the counsel of fellow Gallic / Celtic lovers

Ok, we’ve seen a bit of what CA has planned for the Gauls now. The Arverni Faction and map layout. There are a few minor changes I personally would like to see but I’m interested to see what other Gallophiles thought:

    Recommended Changes for CA:

    1. Suessiones ('Six clans'): Replace the Treverii. These guys were the leaders of the Belgae confederacy in the 3rd century during their struggle with the Carnutes and Aedui. I’d like to see these guys replace the Treverii (who were further east) as a third Belgae faction.(see banner below)
    2. Volcae ('Wolves'): These guys need to have their iconic wolf (as depicted on numerous artifacts) used as their emblem.(see banner below)
    3. Pictones: These guys would be better served with their one hand emblem.
    4. Iceni: Tri-moon emblem (see banner below)
    5. Atrebate: Change (see banner below)
    6. Nervii: Change (see banner below)
    7. Helvetii: Change (see banner below)
    8. Insubres: Change (see banner below)
    9. Briganti: To a Bull
    10. Osimisii: Replace the Namnetes. Disappointed no Veneti but I can appreciate CA have chosen the Namnetes to save confusion with the Veneti of Italy, but I’d prefer to see another sea faring tribe in an area known for such. I’d suggest the Osimisii, a larger tribe than that of the Namnetes.
    11. Volcae Trocmi Banner replaces the current Galation one.
    12. Senones: These were largest of the Cisalpine Gauls and sackers of Rome. I’d like to see them included somehow, either as a marauding band or occupiers of Ariminum. (see banner below)

The following are banners produced some years ago using material cultural / archeology.

    GAUL EXAMPLES

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Pictones Allobroge Parisii Senones Helvetii Eburones Insubres Volcae Tectosages

    BELGAE EXAMPLES

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Menapii Suessiones Atrebate Nervii

    BRITON EXAMPLES
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Selgovae Setantii Carvetii Iceni

    GALATIAN EXAMPLE

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    Volcae Trocmi

Banners: Some are not too bad (ie Aedui having a horse is quite apt given the significant worship of Epona throughout their territory, Carnutes having the depiction of a horned helm). Others ..well hmm. What do you guys think, where can improvements be made?

What say you? Thoughts / suggestions?

Every single one of the Celtic units needs a special attack called 'Drink magick potion'.
On a more serious note, I doubt something this scale will be impletended by CA, but maybe by Mods, if Rome II will be Modable.

I'm already happy if CA keep it the way not showing Gauls as idiots charging in front like an ox with the brain of a pigeon

    Also need naked warriors!

You have not made any arguments as to why these should be made into reality, other than "I want it like this" and "look at my banners from imageshack!". Since in reality these changes are just modifying faction names I simply don't care. I'll leave that to a modder after the game is made to see if it is worth having.

Your banners are terrible and would make a poor contribution to the game: The colours are too similar and so are the designs- most of them are brown and have loops, if you're lucky the designs use a dull gold rather than dull grey. Good luck distinguishing which is which in battle mode, or in the campaign map.
My recommendation is to simplify them. The ones you see in the Rome2 campaign planner emphasize contrast of colour and icons so they are easy to distinguish from eachother, even with similar colour shades. Just adjusting the lightness of some of those brown banners will make a huge difference.
Oh, and make emblems, not banners. Visuals is key, not heraldry.

There, you have my thoughts and opinions.

Good point. We haven't seen any mention of Gaesatae.

.. Please read what I have posted. The post is specifically addressed to fellow Celtophiles .. the numerous members of this community that I respect (and there are quite a few) that have a keen interest and knowledge of the subject matter. It is their counsel / assistence / ideas I seek. I just don't have the time to argue why I need to argue, sry.

.. now was that so hard? I tend to completely agree and have started working on simplified variants adopting CA's theme... but I'm extremely time poor atm hence the 'call to arms' for those like minded.

All Gauls are Celts but not all Celts are Gauls. It is simply - Gauls are Celtic tribes. Britons are Celtic tribes, too.
