About Pontus as day 1 DLC

I do not understand the logic behind offering a free day 1 DLC. I don't see what benefits Sega or CA would get from more day 1 purchases (versus day 2 or day 3). Couldn't they have included Pontus a free week 1 DLC to make things less complicated?

day 1 dlc is complicated?

It doesn't mean you only get the DLC on the first day, you know? It only says that it will be downloadable since day 1, no matter when you buy or install the game.

I rather think a day one DLC is simple but it always irked me that they couldnt just include it in game prior to releasing it as a DLC.

That always stumped me.

I think it has to do with it being in a separate budget from the main game

Edit: Or maybe it's not as simple as just unlocking the faction and they needed extra time to work on it? (Like while the game goes gold etc., when they normally wouldn't be able to work on the game much)

Pontus will probably be still under construction when the game is being converted to CDs and shipping. Those who bought the game directly from steam might have pontus in their main game at the first installation since that should be the most updated version of the game, while CDs will first ahve to install the disc content, and then download the Steam content.

In a nutshell it's Day 1 DLC for free because they are selling day one DLC for $8.

Pontus helps legitimize Day 1 premium priced DLC. It also is an attempt to earn a little good will in advance of the inevitable premium DLC onslaught to follow.
