Default Are the Marian reforms mandatory in the game?

I remember reading somewhere in the forums that the player had a choice not to accept the Marian reforms but I forgot what the source was, does anyone know if there was anything stated by CA regarding this matter? If it is mandatory I won't really mind but I actually prefer using hastati, principes, Triarii etc...

The Marian reform didn't really changed the troops themselves that much, but simply increased the available recruitment pool and put more focus on soldiers being self sufficient with the transportation of equipment, and made a few changes to the organization and administration. It was more focused on the army structure.

I think you'll be able to recruit whatever troops you have already unlocked. I don't believe that technology will be lost, even if you advance and receive access to more modern troops and equipment

In Empire and Shogun, I don't think I ever lost access to any soldier type as I advanced. I believe I even could train pike-men throughout the entire game in Empire, although I'm not sure(because I never used them ^^)

Maybe not in those games, but in Rome 1 the Marian reforms made almost all previous units obsolete. All sword, spear, missile and mounted units. Lorica hamata to be replaced with lorica segmentata - simple, neat, and wrong. It was a real pain, especially as you had barely just been able to construct the required buildings for triarii before the reforms suddenly kicked in, and you couldn't recruit OR retrain them anymore. So in R:TW I deleted all "and not_marian reforms" requirements in the export_descr_buildings.txt, because the premise was just ludicrous. The reforms were set to be triggered as soon as five Roman cities (regardless of which Roman faction) had built an Imperial Palace, which of course caused the event to happen much too early. I don't know what it's going to be like in Rome 2, but I hope it will be different.

They've said you will have the choice to do it or not. I got the feeling that it's a bit like Fall of the Samurai offering you a Foreign Trade Port, and if you reject it more than a couple of times, they stop ever offering one to you. So in R2, you'd better take it or leave it!

Or possibly the reform will come through military tech ? If you concentrated on the military tech the reform will come much faster but you can also make it slower by concentrating on other tech (culture and ?).

I hope it's something that is researched. I don't want to get the offer to adopt the reforms at 250BCE then 230BCE then never have it offered again.

I heard from some posters that you had to choose whether to implement the reforms or not, so it was a dilemma. Consider how the idea was so terrible and ridiculous I did not give it much credit. But they sounded like they got it from an official source.
