I think it's a close up of the unit, so it's never going to be amazing quality.

They should have used some simple art portraits like in older titles. A shame, considering the amazing aesthetics of the rest of the game. But I guess I'll get used to it with time, like I have with all such little quirks of the past titles.

Bear in mind these 3D portraits might be animated and even follow the course of the action (which would be totally awesome). Looks pretty good to me tho.

no it actually looks like a normal siege, 3 icons on the top which are also in the city, theyre the capturepoints, also there's blue units inside the walls, so its a siege

I thought it was for a siegable city. You can see yellow blobs in the city. I thought they were flags.
