Will there be the Praetorian Guard in Rome II Total War?
Will there be the Praetorian Guard in Rome II Total War?
They were not only 'bodyguards', there was Praetorians (the men tasked to protect the general etc.) and Praetorian cohorts as an elite military force that fought along legions campaigning. They formed a Praetorian legion as well from one moment (It begins to be used as a military force mostly during and after the 1st c. AD), that consisted in half numbers of a normal legion. So I think they should be limited to 5 infantry cohorts (10 cohorts = a full legion).
Preatorians were generals bodyguard in the field in the late republican era. Most of the iconic figures of the Roman Republic had their own cohors praetoria as personal bodyguards
Its only later at the very fridge of the game end date that they became the infamous emperor-killers based in Rome. (Although they were often justified) Before that, they were elite battlefield unit recruited from the very best of the veteran legionaries.

If they don't exist in the game, I"m sure someone will mod them in sooner or later. Hell, there will probably be mods to make the gameplay as much like the old Rome as possible.
Strong probability they will be in the game. It would make it even better if they added a future to give them some form of political influence during the late-game (imperial era) as they did during their day.
In the Nile panoramic you could see a few units of them. Not only are they basically confirmed, but there also looks like there is no cap on how many of them we can have.

Have we ever had a cap on how many units can be in an army at once anyway. We have simply the campaign cap and I would like to see 5 be the number although I won't be too bothered if they're not capped. I don't mind an elite army like in the good old days of Rome 1.
We Came, We Saw, We Ran Away!
In Shogun 2 we had caps on specific units in the campaign. My bad, I mis-wrote that. I meant like units being capped in general. I hated the very idea of capping units. If I have the denarii, I want to use it at my own will.
Capping units is just stupid but I have this feeling we may be seeing it's return in Rome 2 for selected units.
I believe there were unit caps in Nappy, but not sure about Empire. So they were definitely in this series before and that kind of gets me paranoid about seeing it's return.

I thought those were Evocati with the pume headress?
I am curious how they will look ingame later. It is correct that we saw a unit in the nile images which could been Praetorians or which looked like the Praetorians in Rome 1, but to be honest it is hard to make an extra unit of them, because their equipment was the same as the normal Legionary, only in better quality, but you can't visualisize thatGiving them huge crests is one way, but that let them look like on parade and not battle ready. The only way to visualisize them propably is to give them a scorpion symbol on their shields. We have by the way only one artifact which could been related to the praetorians and that is a piece of a shield showing parts of such a scorpion. Otherwise Archaeologists have no chance to relate artifacts to the praetorians.
Proud to be a real Prussian.
I think they will be an elite roman unit in the late game. I also think a single unit might appear as a garrison in every city, just like the samurai retainers from shogun 2.
The most dangerous unit ever to exist (for those who employed them of course)!![]()
Under the patronage of Emperor Maximinus Thrax
"Steps to be taken in case Russia should be forced out of war considered. Various movements [of ] troops to and from different fronts necessary to meeting possible contingencies discussed. Conference also weighed political, economic, and moral effect both upon Central and Allied powers under most unfavorable aspect from Allied point of view. General conclusions reached were necessity for adoption of purely defensive attitude on all secondary fronts and withdrawing surplus troops for duty on western front. By thus strengthening western front [those attending] believed Allies could hold until American forces arrive in numbers sufficient to gain ascendancy."
~General Pershing, report to Washington, 26 July 1917
I'd be happy seeing the Roman general have a bunch of Cohors Praetoria with him, who can dismount and fight, but not do their own thing. OR, they could be recruitable, but a 1x limit per army, and only in armies with really experienced generals. Then after the Empire event, they could be only in the emperor's army.

Praetorians are pretty boys with capes. I expect EXPECT geeks to want them badly!
Praetorians were known to be soft and politically active in the downfall of leaders. Useless, pretty and full of hot air.
I have read of one instance where the side with praetorians were beaten partly because the praetorians were soft from living in the city.
I do believe when they were first created (without capes I believe) they were ok though.
Later they were replaced with german bodybuards who were very loyal by nature.
In short most praetorians should be treated in game as rich garrison troops.
WOE to the cape loving geeks that love flitting about this way and that pretending to be rangers![]()
