Default Gimp DDS plug in problem.

I am using gimp. I have been using this tutorial to learn how to skin with gimp. So I downloaded the gimp dds plug in and installed it into the plug-ins file. Next I used Vercingetorix's PAK Extractor and used it succesfully. Then i went to the textures folder and tried to open a skin but this pops up
GL_ARB_Texture_compression is not supported by your open GL implementation
Opening 'C:\Program files\The Creative Assembly\Rome-Total War\data\packs\DATA\MODELS_UNIT\TEXTURES\UNIT_CARTHAGE_PELTAST.TGA.DDS failed: plugin could not open image
So I cant open any skin! Its very strange. So Im wondering if the plug-in is wrong any answers?

this is where I downloaded it from, I downloaded the second one.

(I hope someone can help me, I think there are few peop;e who skin with gimp :tooth: )

I might have found the problem, it says copy the new textures folder into models_units and I didnt do that but I did it but it still doesnt work.

Well I reinstalled the plug in and it still doesnt work! What did i do wrong? I extracted everything to plugins folder. And thats what the tutorial says to do.

Well that is the link I used and I think it is the one you used too. If it's not working I really don't know. You could always use another programme to convert it to a .tga and then edit and convert it back I suppose...

Well when I installed it all I did was extract the contents to the plug-ins folder was there a step I missed?

What do you mean by gtk runtime? I have no idea what that is. But I will try to reinstall gimp again.

Edit: Yes I do have gtk runtime, I downloaded before installing gimp should I not get it this time?

Where can I get the latest drivers, and that link that you posted did not really help. Also, would it work if I downloaded photoshop demo and tried skinning with it?

    priginally posted on that link
I recently added a DDS plugin to The Gimp, now when trying to save an image as
    DDS, Gimp replies:
"GL_ARB_texture_compression is not supported by your OpenGL implementation."

So I googled around and found Mesa doesn't support this (I am running XOrg
6.8.1 with the radeon driver on a Radeon 9800Pro).
Heard there where some patches, but before immersing into patch orgies I
thought I ask the list whether there are other workarounds to this.

I am aware that ATI's fglrx driver module would provide such functions, but
fglrx has serious bugs and other issues, especially with video overlay,
besides they don't support XOrg yet and the driver won't build on 6.8 anyway,
    so this is no option.

    Dex
mesa cvs had support for compressed textures on radeon, r200, and i8xx
chips. Due to licensing issues and what exactly you are tying to do,
you may or may not need the external compression lib. There is no
open 3d support for r300 chips (such as yours) as of yet.

    Alex

So, am I stuck with R300 altogether or would said external compression lib
    provide the needed tc/s3tc?
If so, where do I get that lib?
I installed a lib called libtxc_dxtn, is that it? (in which cae I did
something wrong since Gimp still complains)

    Dex

so it was dissussoi on another site
    now for driver part
do u have graphic card installled
if yes then visit the manufacturers home page for lattest drivers
    if u have onboard then
    download drivers for that
u can google the chip set no

to find out which gpu u have go to device manager then click on graphic adapters and note down the model name
