And here is the second part of that old forgotten work. Don't know if the game is still at a stade where it need new ideas, but, well. Apparently the end of the text deviates a bit from units suggestion and right into lore modifications... Seems like I was very pationate about the whole thing when I wrote it...
[Mercenaries :]
[Sheikah Spies :]
That occured to me while play-testing hyrule : despite being a well balanced and varied force, they don’t have a single infiltration unit. So here is the idea: as long as Hyrule is allied with the Sheikah Cadre in the campaign, they can recruit Sheikah Spies units as mercenaries near Kokorico. Should have an higher recruiting and upkeep cost than the original ones, of course.
[Heroes' Shade]
You know, the classy skeletton guy that teach you sword moves in TP. Should probably only be hireable by the Kingdom of Hyrule (as he spent his life protecting it) and link's faction if we either get to play something like that in the campaign (as he is technically OOT/MM link, and mentored TP link.)
[Ganty]
Could be the commander of a not-so-great band of thiefs, with not-so-great commanding capabilities herself, but with the advantage of being hireable by anyone (what with being a lawless thief and all). Could also have an alternate version, much more powerfull and leading a nice unit of archers, but only hireable by the kingdom of hyrule ("Knight Ganty" or something).
[Gerudo:]
[Ice Archers:]
The Gerudos are supposed to be the best archers in hyrule. That’s in the faction description. But while they do have pretty good line archers, they don’t have any truly “elite” archers like the Kokiri Emerald Archers (the Scouts currently being quite useless, and probably more intended to feel like "infiltrators" rather than truly "elites" either way). You know, a pricey, really powerfull elite archers unit, the kind that would get the player thinking “alright, those are the best archers in all hyrule we were talking about.”
And in OOT, you find the Ice Arrows at the end of the Gerudo Training Grounds, so that seemed to be fitting. What I’m seeing is a unit of elite archers, with stats somewhere around 63 soldiers, 12 ranged attack, 8 contact attack, 6 defense skill and 4 armor, 0 shield, 1 hit point. Very long range or Long Range missiles, effective against armor, excellent moral, excellent stamina, bonus fighting in deserts, can’t hide. And an ungodly recruiting and upkeep price to go with it.
As far as appearance goes, we could have something akin to the gerudo captains, with those cool silver plates of armor, as they would be in-tone with that whole ice theme. Big, impressive looking bows, one or two nice scimitars for close combat, maybe some facial tatoos like the wind witches, and projectiles looking like ice arrows once fired (duh).
Wouldn’t that be cool?
[Hyrule:]
[WW Zelda/Tetra]
Yeah, I know we already got a whole bunch of zeldas, and the only two I recognized among the five were the OOT and TP ones. So maybe one of the other 3 is already supposed to be the WW one. Anyway, I just put this one here because she is the only one to actually have some proficiency in close combat in canon (no, sorry TP Zelda, I don't count "holding an ornated sword for 5 seconds before dropping it" as "being proficient in close combat", though I will admit you fared much better with that glowing laser bow thingy at the end of the game... er, I'm getting off tracks here.). Also, she can be translated fairly nicely in a more "serious" art style to fit in this game.
[WoG Zelda]
The original game is so bad it became a legend, but it did have the merit of giving us a female main character in a zelda game. And the artstyle from that "Staff of Gamelon" fan project I stumbled upon does look good, and strangely reminded me of the artstyle of HTW, so I though... Why not?
[Stalfos]
[Red Bubbles]
You know, those flying skulls charging at you to burn you in OOT? Thought they could fit nicely in the Stalfos Roster. Would probably be a fast, rather good at killing soldiers, but dirt-cheap, few in numbers, with almost no defensive skill at all, the kind you throw at the ennemy to inflict as much damage as possible and disorganize him, but knowing full well you will only be left with a handfull of bubbles at the end of tha battle, if the unit survives it at all.
[Kokiris]
[Kokiri Orchestra]
A motivation unit, akin to the zora healers. Only a few soldiers not at all proficient in close combat, supposed to stay in the rear, playing music to motivate the front line fighters. If at all possibe, the musicians should have a mix of ocarinas, violins (as those are the two instruments linked to kokiris in canon), flutes (skull kids in OOT as well as"Flute Boy" in ALTTP) and maybe also percussions (think about the lost wood theme from OOT.)
[Fado]
The other one. The sage guy with his violin from WW. Would make a support hero, with traits lowering his hitpoints and only commanding a kokiri orchestra, but very nice leadership capabilities to compensate.
[And a random building for good measure:]
[Gerudo Slave Market:]
Bonus to civil order and population growth. It’s basically a place where slaves, mostly male hylians captured in battle or during raids, are sold at a high price to the general populace. Main inspiration comes from OOT, of course, where some NPCs comment on how gerudos sometimes came to castle town to find “boyfriends”, and we also have the case of those guys captured while working on repairing a bridge, but who turned out not to be, er... properly inclined for the gerudo’s needs. And of course, it’s also a matter of logic: we are talking about a whole kingdom where everyone is female and genetically only able to give birth to more females, so the only way for them not to go extinct would be to find males somewhere else.. Which could also partly explain why there is so much tension going on between them and hyrule: seeing sons and husbands getting taken away by those desert dwellers crossing the border for centuries would certainly do a lot to build up some animosity.
By the way, on a somewhat related matter, I wanted to add that that one bit of HTW lore about Ganondorf forbidding gerudos from taking mates aside from him is absolutely, utterly nonsensical, and should be burned asap, never to be talked of again. It may have been added in to make that ruler feel “evil” or something, but when you consider that that one law basically amounts to destroying his own kingdom’s population in a mere generation, it really ends up making him look utterly stupid and incompetent more than anything else (‘cause, you know, there is just so much reproduction duty a single male like him will be able to do, especially when he’s supposed to have a bunch of other important things to attend to, what with rulling the nation and all that...). So, yeah. I don’t care about Ganondorf being evil, scarry and whatsnot. But adding “dumb as a plank” to his long list of defects is seriously a bit too much for a game trying to get a more “serious” take on the LoZ series. Though even the “I’m evil because I’m sooo evil” could use some tweaking, like it was done with Ganon (the beast one) and his tragically classic, but still somewhat relatable past... For exemple, you could take that one single line about jalousing the fertility of Hyrule’s lands we got in WW, and start from here, portraying him as a ruthless ruler, but one still acting for the sake of his own people (and if the whole world has to burn in the process, so be it).
And... I got completly sidetracked on the lore. Sorry about that.
