    Default Attrition!

Maybe it's old news to you lot but I just noticed this in the latest Rally Point:

Now unless I'm completely retarded, and that's been up for debate since the chocolate starfish incident of grade 5, I don't recall the original RTW or M2TW having any sort of attrition factor hardcoded into the game. To me this is an awesome feature and I'm sure desert regions will have attrition too. This kind of deals with the issue of "wilderness" provinces some very special members have been complaining about. Perhaps an army's real challenge in conquering germania, arabia or scythian steppe will be the severe attrition losses they'll take venturing into wild territory like that. Either way, looks like a great feature that can be taken advantage of if they provide good campaign modding support.

You're right it wasn't in Rome or Medieval II; but the feature was first added in Napoleon, at least I think so. It's a cool idea, but usually the losses are so miniscule as to be non effective. Let's say you have an army of 1,200 men and you march them through wilderness in one turn. You'd probably only lose about 40 men all in all due to attrition, unless CA have increased the stats this time round. I hope this time though the effect will be properly implemented.

Yeah, this was added in Napoleon.
It was effective, especially if you won a battle but with few troops survived. The problem in Shogun II was that Winter was long only a turn, so not a big problem, but instead in FotS was more problematic becouse winter still several turns.

This is old news. Attrition during winter is in Shogun II. Pretty sure it was in Napoleon as well.

I believe it's in for Sieges as well, not seen since Med: Viking invasion.

Old news. It's a great feature and if it's in sieges as well, that would be cool. Hopefully CA will tweak attrition a bit so as not to overwhelm the player too much.

The more important thing is the wolves. If I remember correctly the rally point showed a tooltip that said that those wolves increase attrition.

Holy crap, could you imagine your army gets whittled down by a pack of rabid wolves. I wonder if we can watch it happen on the battle map?

I know you're trying to be funny, but that's just plain rude and ignorant. We all don't live in the wildernes hunting deers and filleting wild trout while beckoning our buxom blonde wife to get the sleigh ready. Rabid wolves don't just run around here willy nilly. I live in a big city, with people and cars and buidling and stuff. I even have a Gamestop like 2 blocks away. We have intersections.

    WE HAVE INTERSECTIONS.

Any ideas for other attrition modifiers? Maybe even some that decrease attrition?

Kind of reminds me of that scene in Centurion when the Romans escape from the Picts, only to be hunted down and eaten alive by wolves!

What the...how the...Why would peaceful creatures such as Wolves even kill men? In times like these, when the forests were wider and deeper, more filled with animals, Wolves would have plenty of food and wouldn't have any form of need to hunt men. Maybe Wolves two thousand years ago did act different, but doubtfully. There ain't no real animals that hunt men for food, and it is a stereotype invented by people such as the Grimm Brothers.

But then, maybe it adds some immersion to the game, even still, I'm personally bothered by it.

Maybe if you have like a good barbarian scout and are experienced in the frontier your general can gain traits that reduce attrition. Better yet, imagine if you have frontier legions that you craft in the skill tree to be wilderness/frontier specialists. That'd be pretty sweet. Maybe there will be desert and snow specializations for armies.

If it is winter all the time in Germany in every year I'm going to laugh so hard. It actually gets sort of hot during the summer in Germany. Also it's going to get boring if I play as the Suebi and I have to fight during winter every single time. That's like saying in Canada it is always winter, it's not, today it was like 40 degrees Celsius.

Maybe the seasons will change over a pre-set time while you're on your turn? say after 5 minutes of being on your turn it becomes spring then another 5 minutes summer etc? I doubt it but maybe?

I like it. But will there be certain units or faction that will be immune to it like in Napoleon?
