    Why does Rome have no archers in RS1? Did they not have archers historically?

    I don't recall Livy mentioning archers in the second Punic war. Romans had a small Cavalry compliment and some skirmishers. But i don't recall them having archers until the Imperial era. Tedric should know the answer to this. But i believe the mod has it right.

    I personaly stick to classic republic style armies. Heavy on Infantry with no more then 2-3 cav and a few Velites or mercenaries. Most of my Army is comprised't of cohorts. I don't like archers for the Romans. I prefer having distinct armies with completely different strengths. To spam archers or Cav for the Romans seems like cheating to me.

    I don't know about RS1 I'm afraid, having only ever played RSII.....

    If you think about the 3, effectively, periods that RSII is broken down into....

    - Early Republic (Polybians and Socii allies) - then the odd 'mercenary' unit of archers (represented by the Cretan and Celtic varieties) are what you are after
    - Late Republic (post-Marian/Generics), which includes all of Caesar's period and the big Civil Wars, then archers are sometimes present (amongst other lighter infantry with cavalry also) and supplied from 'Allies' - I tend to use he Celtic for these types
    - Imperial - only in these times do we see the regularised sagittarii units of the Auxilia - classically Western types and the famed Eastern ones, both of whom are represented

    Overall non-legion troops were often present in small numbers - I find that two units of archers (either Celtic or later using Auxilia) with each legion/legion-pair stack is a good number.

    And i believe RS1 is not supported since the team moved on to RS2.

    so RS1 is the first mod I've loaded for rtw and just started. should I go ahead and get RS2 instead? is it a lot better? one thing I noticed about rs1 that I love over vanilla is guard mode, units actually hold formation when it's on. so stick to rs1 or get rs2?

    Go RS 2.5.

    Definitely get RS2 (2.5 is the latest version). While RS1 is a pretty decent mod, RS2 blows it out of the water in just about every category.
