    Default Preload option for Steam

    Hi,

Wondering this. Steam users just like CoH2 (i was one oh them )... By CA, allow the people who pre ordered game to install when it hits the gold and enable the game to play when its released? Instead of waiting exact release date and to prevent slowdowns by overload...

I'm not expert of those things but its come to my mind and wanted to share my humble thought with the community.

Imo it'd a real time saver for many!

What you think of it guys?

I hope they do this. I'm guessing it will be a 4-6 hour download for me on my laptop and I would like to do it the night of 2nd of September while I sleep.

Has there ever been a game on Steam that hasn't done preloading?

    Not that I know of.

And I think this is more of a topic for the Steam boards than the TW boards. I would assume Steam would be the ones to decide whether or not it's pre-loadable, not CA.

I completely agree with you (though i have bought a physical copy , so it does change nothing to me)
Disclaimer: the post above is way way prealpha, the final version will be way better than this.

It was kinda life saver for me with CoH2. I was part of beta, tried this and that, made couple surveys and such you know but behind the stage Relic allowed players to load game files increasingly as big portions of data and some minor to average sized updates. And the game was totally playeble with the release. It worked like magic guys! Spared me from countless hours of install and load torment. Because all we know that Steam isnt just perfect with overload issue. And tbh they can not be!

I hope CA, considers that option to favor their playerbase whom choose to buy the from Steam.

Personally, i always prefer physical copies but i'm so hyped and even don't wanna wait for even single day of delay!

I hope so that they let you download a week before launch, currently to download S2tw I take around 12-20h, I dont want to imagine how badly this is going to be on launch day

I preordered on Steam just because of this, as I would have to spend another 10 bux on 'day-one delivery' on Amazon to get the game as soon as I wake up. So with pre-downloading on Steam, I will be able to download the game before (it will take more like 10 hours for me :p).

But amazon guarantees day one delivery on new releases...

In France you have to pay for it, only the 1-3 day delivery is free :/

    Guys please, it's called pirating...

I'm just kidding ,apparently it will happen as said by StealthFox.
StalthFox do you think you could give a link or some such because witch a bloody 30gb download its going to take a while... a really long while. However I have found a way to speed up the download by starting the game while its downloading it updates it by focussing Steams energy to the download and nothing else. For me it cuts down on a couple of hours.

Even if it hasn't been officially confirmed, I can't remember the last Steam game I bought at release that didn't have a 24-72 hour preload window before release. I see no reason why Rome 2 would buck this trend, especially since the DL is going to be massively massive.

I certainly hope their is, I don't think steam servers will be able to take all those downloads without preloading.

Usually when preload s available there will be preload content on popular torrent sites. Its unplayable, mostly for cheap pirates to download it and wait for cracked "patches" to come out to fill in the missing content. However in preloaded state its completely legit, you can download it onto HDD and wait for the disk w/ CD key to come, apply the code, copy the content over waiting for Steam to verify and downoad the rest. No worry about malicious code as Steam will download anything that is not matched with the original files. I dont know how much the difference between on disc version and preloaded version (or the disc contains game content at all), it might or might not worth your effort.

Interesting. I don't mess with files on the internet haha
I'm just going to have to do it the way required when owning a hard-copy. By the way, wouldn't this be faster than you guys who have to download everything since a lot is on the disk already? Forgive my confusion. I'm kind of confused as to how Steam fully works. When I put Shogun 2 in, I find that it installs a fair bit but then there's a significant download right after too. Is most of the data online?

because some update change the file, sometimes the change become too large and it have to download a new file. Especially package file that contained lots of files inside.
